Supporting one of the leading private sector general insurance companies in India, ICICI Lombard’s award-winning legal team is made up of 144 lawyers, out of which 123 are legal professionals and 21 non-legal professionals. In June 2017 the team won a prominent international industry award in New York as the “Best Legal Department in the Asia Pacific Region”, a coveted recognition for any legal department. The entire team is imbibed with a culture of setting high benchmarks and challenging itself to achieve it. General counsel, compliance officer and company secretary, Sanker Parameswaran explains, ‘in order to create an encouraging culture within the team, wherein every team member understands and recognises the organisational obligations and delivers in performance, we in the legal department have consciously endeavoured through intervention, training and front running this culture’. Other than establishing this culture within the team, there have been many events and actions where the department has impacted not only the strategic direction of the organisation but the non-life insurance industry at large. ‘The team has been influential in creating benchmarks not only for the organisation, but also for the industry and is considered to be the most sought after team within the industry and group companies’. In the last couple of years, the team has been instrumental in using technology as an enabler and has come up with couple of great projects, which have gained towering appreciation not only within the organisation and group companies, but have been highly valued and respected amongst the government, regulator and competitors. One of them being the introduction of a compliance management platform created by the team to record and store regulatory recommendations or directions and to administer actions in compliance.
