William Dobbins, general counsel, is the leader of the legal function of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Asia, a subsidiary of JLT Group. JLT is an international insurance company that also offers reinsurance broking, risk consulting and employee benefits services with more than 1,800 employees and locations in 14 Asian countries and territories. The legal team is heavily involved in the heavily regulated insurance industry including in its underwriting procedures, contracts, brokerage and all matters relating to the consulting and benefits businesses. In the last two years the legal team at JLT have managed the legal details involved in the launch of a new storm coverage project, called “One Storm” in conjunction with Munich Re, launched in August 2017. This year the team supported the business surrounding legal matters pertaining to the renewal of the foreign broker license in China and its extension to all lines of insurance brokerage in May 2018. The new scope is the same as a domestic insurance company in PRC and JLT is now in a position to offer all of its products, showing the business-enabling nature of the team’s advice.
