Characterised by strong elements of teamwork, knowledge of the company and efficient use of time, the legal team of Bolsa Nacional de Valores de Costa Rica consistently meet the demands of the National Stock Exchange, its subsidiaries and InterClear Central Securities. As the most senior lawyer in the team, regulatory coordinator Priscilla Soto Quirós works on draft regulations to support the self-regulatory function of the Exchange and InterClear. The legal team has had to face the challenge of fulfilling the legal counselling functions of the company with less personnel, but have nevertheless managed to efficiently streamline the resources that are most needed. Legal regional director Ricardo Hernández admits: ‘These have forced us to be pluri-functional, to know the companies thoroughly and to explore and use information from the environment’. With this in-depth grasp of the company’s operations, the legal team’s activities have gone hand in hand with the company’s success, being a key part of some of its most instrumental cases in particular. It gained significant internal recognition for restructuring the Exchange’s corporate governance system as well as for its subsidiaries and InterClear Central Securities. Through this it has obtained the approval of the General Securities Superintendence of the new Corporate Governance Code of both companies and the internal committees. The legal team also improved the internal information systems of the legal department by implementing a system of digitisation of documents and using digital systems for document generation.
