About

JVS Law (Jurvneshservice) is a Kyiv law firm that has practised international law since 1987. It works where Ukrainian and foreign law meet, acting for foreign investors, aircraft lessors and lenders, and international law firms that need Ukrainian counsel. The firm knows both sides of a cross-border matter: the conflict-of-laws rules that decide which law applies, and the Ukrainian domestic law on which the transaction or the dispute ultimately turns.

The firm is partner-led. Each matter is run by one of four partners from instruction to completion. Two partners hold the degree of Doctor of Laws, Ukraine’s highest academic degree, and one holds a PhD in private international law. The firm has continued to act for international clients from Kyiv without interruption since February 2022.

Practice areas

  • Dispute resolution: international commercial arbitration (VIAC, LCIA, SCC, ICAC at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, UNCITRAL ad hoc), commercial litigation up to the Supreme Court, and recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards and judgments in Ukraine and abroad.
  • Legal opinions and expert evidence: opinions and expert evidence on Ukrainian law, on instructions from parties and directly from tribunals, including before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and the High Court in London.
  • Defence technology and export control: classification and export permits for military and dual-use goods, licensing of state-owned defence technology, joint ventures with foreign partners, and access by foreign engineers to classified Ukrainian technology.
  • Contracts, licensing and franchising: cross-border contracts, technology and IP licensing, franchising and distribution, including market entry for international brands.
  • Digital and technology: IT and technology transactions and data protection.
  • Investing in Ukraine: wartime and currency restrictions, corporate structuring and joint ventures, due diligence and market entry, and investment screening under EU and US rules as it affects Ukrainian transactions.
  • Aviation and asset finance: aircraft leasing, acquisition and repossession, ABS-linked financings and Ukrainian law opinions for leading international aircraft lessors and lenders.

Partners of the firm wrote the Ukraine monographs on civil procedure (2019) and intellectual property (2019) for Kluwer Law International’s International Encyclopaedia of Laws, and Ukraine chapters on international arbitration, licensing, franchising and aviation finance for international practice guides. A partner is currently writing the Ukraine volume on private international law for the same series. Gennadii Tsirat teaches international commercial arbitration and international civil procedure at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
