Matthew specialises in business and property work. He has a client base across the country and covers all aspects of Business and Property work including, commercial litigation, chancery, real property, trusts, landlord and tenant matters and others.

Matthew sits as a Deputy District Judge (civil) (authorised for Business & Property work).

Matthew is also a Civil Mediation Council Registered Mediator.

For many years, Matthew has been appointed to the Attorney General’s Civil Panel of Junior Counsel. He is currently on the “B” Panel and accepts instructions in areas such as director’s disqualification, contentious probate, commercial litigation and others.

Before joining Chambers, Matthew worked as a Fox Scholar in a leading commercial litigation firm in Toronto, Canada named Lenczner Slaght LLP.

Matthew is frequently instructed in high profile inquests, including deaths in custody and unlawful killings. Matthew represented the Ministry of Justice in the Peter Sutcliffe inquest (aka the “Yorkshire Ripper”). Matthew’s experience of inquests spans many years, including being on the legal team representing the Toronto Chief of Police in an inquest into the police shooting of three persons in a mental health crisis. He particularly accepts instructions from public bodies including, government bodies, healthcare bodies and local authorities. Matthew has significant experience in human rights litigation and advisory work for businesses, states, claimants and defendants. He has particular experience of defending public bodies against human rights claims.

Internationally, Matthew has worked on cases involving matters in Bangladesh, Cuba, Libya, Ukraine and Uganda and others.

Matthew also co-authored two book chapters that were published in authoritative texts by Oxford University Press and Palgrave Macmillan. He also conducted a press conference in Kyiv, Ukraine concerning the ICC’s investigation into international crimes committed during the Euromaidan revolution.

Until recently, Matthew was a Consultant for Global Rights Compliance LLP, which is an advisory firm specialising in international human rights, humanitarian and criminal law and business and human rights. Its work includes advising the Council of Europe, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and foreign states.

Matthew lectures at local universities and judges a number of moots including the international FDI Moot, the international Jessup Moot and others.
