Position

Michael is a recognised specialist in clinical negligence, inquests inquiries, and was recommended for silk in 2026.

In his medical work he is instructed for his expertise in catastrophic life-changing injury and fatal accident cases with complex causation, concurrent HRA claims and/or significant value. His caseload includes the full spectrum of claims, instructed by both defence organisations and Claimant solicitors, from plastic surgery to neurosurgery, as well as product liability claims arising from breast implants, hip and knee implants, surgical mesh, and other medical products, alleged systemic failures within treatment centres, and NHS indemnity disputes; as well as amputations, wrongful birth, and birth injury claims.

He has a particular interest in brain injury, spinal injury and mental health, and is a co-author of ‘Medical Treatment: Decisions and the Law’ (4th edition).

Michael’s coronial practice covers jury and Article 2 Inquests of significance, arising from deaths in nursing homes, secure psychiatric facilities and prisons, including where CQC prosecutions are being considered, and where his extensive experience in questioning lay and expert clinical witnesses of all disciplines is of distinct benefit.

Michael is often instructed in sensitive inquests involving children or those with media attention such as Ruth Perry, and where reputational damage is a significant risk; but also represents the full range of Interested Persons, including NHS Trusts, individual clinicians, nursing homes, and families.

He is adept at providing strategic advice on sensitive information disclosure and handling vulnerable witnesses; acting in Judicial review and HRA proceedings in the High Court and/or Administrative Court; and brings to bear several years of recent experience sitting as an Assistant Coroner in West London, North London, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire, primarily hearing medical inquests.  Michael acts as a pupil supervisor and provides training to Claimant and Defendant lawyers.
