Millie O'Connell is undertaking her common law pupillage under the supervision of Anna Wilkinson and Amrit Atwal.

Millie has gained experience across a wide range of civil claims during mini-pupillages at leading sets across the North-Eastern Circuit, including personal injury and clinical negligence matters. She has observed and assisted with fast-track and small-claims hearings for road traffic accidents as well as conferences with medical experts in clinical negligence cases. These experiences have provided a solid grounding in the factual and technical complexities that underpin civil liability cases.

Millie has a keen interest in advocacy and dispute resolution, and has gained a wide range of legal experience through judge marshalling, mooting, and volunteering. Her advocacy potential has been recognised through success in national competitions. Millie was the winner of the North-East and Yorkshire Regional Heat of BPP’s Advocate of the Year competition and went on to compete as a National Finalist at the Old Bailey in London. Millie has also coached and mentored school students in the Leeds Schools Family Law Mooting Competition, helping to develop the next generation of advocates.

Millie has an approachable demeanour and has gained experience in offering practical and emotional support to vulnerable clients and witnesses through her voluntary work for the Witness Service at Leeds Magistrates’ Court.

Employment

Millie O’Connell is undertaking her common law pupillage under the supervision of Anna Wilkinson and Amrit Atwal.

Millie has a particular interest in employment law, strengthened by her time judge marshalling at Birmingham Employment Tribunal. She observed claims involving race and disability discrimination, as well as post-trial negotiations on remedies and compensation.

Millie’s pro-bono work at the Welfare Rights and Tribunals Clinics has equipped her with essential client-handling experience, supporting vulnerable individuals to challenge welfare decisions by conducting research, drafting interview questions and preparing supporting evidence. This role developed her ability to build rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds, adapt communication styles, and manage sensitive issues.
