Position
Ian is a barrister with a broad practice and a particular focus on commercial litigation, international arbitration, public international law, and international human rights law. He is regularly instructed in complex, high-value cases, often with an international dimension. His recent cases include: Güriş İnşaat v. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (ICSID Case No. ARB/23/36); advising Chevron in landmark arbitration clearing the way for US$53bn Hess merger; EE Ltd v. Avanti Broadband Ltd [2025] EWHC 1160 (TCC); and Suppipat & Ors v. Narongdej & Ors [2023] EWHC 1988 (Comm). As well as acting as a junior in led matters, Ian is regularly instructed as sole Counsel and has considerable experience as an advocate. He is experienced in international commercial and investment arbitrations under the UNCITRAL, ICC, and LCIA Rules and the ICSID Convention. Ian has a strong interest in international human rights law, including the right to liberty and security, the right to a fair trial, and freedom of expression, in particular. He is routinely instructed in applications to the European Court of Human Rights; petitions to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention; and submissions to other UN Special Procedures.
Career
Called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 2017. Officer of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Law Committee. Former teaching assistant on the Conflict of Laws module on the BCL at the University of Oxford. Selected publications include: Banking Litigation (forthcoming); The Common Law Jurisprudence on the Conflict of Laws (2023); Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability (2021); ‘Is Magna Carta more honoured in the breach?’ (2015) Birkbeck Law Review 3(1) 173. Prior to coming to the Bar, trained and worked as a journalist and in senior public relations roles.
