South East

For almost 100 years, Dehns’ core business has been to secure and defend intellectual property rights for local and international businesses. It is a proudly European firm and continues to focus on assisting clients to secure and uphold protection in all European countries and beyond.

Dehns is one of Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys with almost 200 people and seven offices (London, Munich, Oxford, Brighton, Manchester, Bristol and Sandwich), in addition to a strong, well established network of global partnerships.

The firm’s practical and commercial approach to intellectual property helps turn inspired thinking into patents, trade marks and registered designs which become valuable commercial assets for clients. As an approachable, proactive and experienced team, Dehns provides specific and tailored advice on all aspects of British, European and international patent, design and trade mark law.

The firm: The firm’s straightforward, business-oriented approach, combined with its technical excellence, has made it a genuine market leader. In the past year, the firm is proud to have increased its UK, European and international patent filings, opposition and litigation work to record levels – this includes filing more than 5,000 patent applications in 2016. On the trade mark side of the practice, growth continues with new and existing clients.

The firm’s patent work mainly comes from European direct clients, primarily from the UK and Scandinavia; however, Dehns also acts directly for a large number of US Fortune 500 clients and handles a significant amount of work originating in Asia. Clients range from multinational corporates and SMEs, to universities and private inventors.

The majority of trade mark work is generated from UK and US direct clients, and many organisations have been trade mark clients for more than 25 years, and some for more than 40 years.

Dehns ensures its patent and trade mark professionals receive intensive training, and has a policy of recruiting highly qualified graduates and post-graduates into the firm; no fewer than 40% of attorneys have PhDs. The firm has an outstanding record of professional examination successes, which has seen the Gill prize for highest marks in the country being awarded to a number of Dehns’ trainees.

Types of work undertaken: Clients benefit from expertise in a wide range of intellectual property services, including: preparation, filing and prosecution of applications; opposition and cancellation actions; advice on areas of conflict; regular watching for patents and trade marks of competitors; and conducting infringement and other proceedings.

With patent work, Dehns is particularly active in the fields of computing, electronics, telecommunications, automotive, engineering, aeronautics, civil engineering, hi-tech physics, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, biotechnology, petrochemicals, polymer chemistry, textiles and materials science and metallurgy.

Trade mark sectors include broadcasting and communications, computing, publishing, leisure and entertainment, food and drinks, cosmetics, finance and travel.

Dehns’ extensive experience in contentious matters ranges from European oppositions and appeals to worldwide infringement conflicts. In non-contentious matters such as mergers, acquisitions and re-financings, where intellectual property can form an important part of a firm’s assets, the practice undertakes intellectual property audits, advises on the strength of the intellectual property and records a party’s interest.

Dehns provides comprehensive litigation advice to major multinational corporations, either as specialist advisors as part of a wider team, including solicitors and barristers, or as an in-house standalone litigation unit. The experience and relevant qualifications of its litigation attorneys mean that Dehns is qualified to represent clients in a number of UK and European courts and, with a comprehensive pan-European and international network, including a Munich office, Dehns advises many clients on multi-jurisdictional litigation issues.

Other offices: Munich, Oxford, Brighton, Manchester, Bristol and Sandwich (Discovery Park)
