Career

Álvaro Josué Yáñez is the Firm’s Managing Partner and co-head of the Energy & Climate Change practice. He has over 25 years of experience advising on complex projects across the energy sector, including the mining, oil and gas, and power subsectors.

His practice covers the full lifecycle of energy projects, from the incorporation of local vehicles and the securing of contracts, permits and licences, through to legal support during operational stages. He has extensive experience in the structuring, drafting and negotiation of M&A transactions in the hydrocarbons sector, including the acquisition of companies and equity interests, as well as associated due diligence processes.

Álvaro regularly advises on complex contractual arrangements, including earn-in and farm-in agreements, joint venture agreements (including joint operating agreements and production sharing contracts), and infrastructure-related contracts such as EPC and BOOMT agreements.

Prior to joining the firm, he served for eight years as senior legal counsel to Colombia’s largest private hydrocarbon operator, where he led the legal structuring of key projects that enabled the company to scale its production from 15,000 to over 310,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

He holds a law degree from Universidad del Rosario and an LL.M. in Corporate Law from Instituto de Empresa (IE), Madrid.
