About

SM & Co. Advocates (formerly Shonubi, Musoke & Company Advocates) was registered as a law firm in 1987. The firm was started at a time when new attitudes and opportunities were emerging in Uganda, and has steadily grown into one of the largest firms in the country, having 31 professional staff, comprising of eight (8) partners, twenty (20) associates, one (1) of counsel and two (2) consultants.

In a jurisdiction where few firms have managed to specialise, we have succeeded in building a specialised practice with core capabilities in, all fields of corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, tax, entertainment, energy and infrastructure, aviation, litigation and dispute resolution practice ranging from non-contentious transactional work to highly contentious complex litigation.

Our expertise and business knowledge have consolidated our position as market leaders, exemplified by our lengthy and ever-increasing portfolio of impressive international, regional and local clients. Our portfolio of clients includes both international, regional and local institutions such as financial institutions, development finance institutions, private equity funds, academic institutions, electricity generators and distributors, property developers, NGO’s, telecommunication companies, insurance companies, petroleum companies as well as government agencies and statutory bodies.

The strategic alliance with the global law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa added an Africa wide pool of legal expertise to the firm’s resources; rendering the firm a one stop legal centre for complex continental investments across the greater African landscape (including those with English law competencies). This together with very good working relationships with several other global legal firms/brands, continue to earn the firm international recognition for mastery and leadership in business and corporate law.

This leadership spans market dominance and repute in the fields of energy and mining, public private partnerships, in the oil and gas sector and in its traditional strongholds in corporate and commercial law, M&A, project finance, banking and finance (including Islamic banking), telecommunications, real estate, aviation and litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

SM Registrars Limited, the firm’s company secretarial subsidy, caps this impressive menu of services by providing dedicated company secretarial services, regulation and compliance assessments, as well as corporate governance training in line with international best practice.
