The firm: Mabushi Chambers (formerly A&JN Mabushi) was founded in 1996 by Augustin Mabushi. Before establishing the firm Augustin Mabushi was an independent legal consultant and lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Burundi. In 2000, a former senior judge joined the firm for eight years as a new partner.

In 2002, the firm acquired new office space and expanded its services to include tax and regional integration consultancy services. In 2012, the firm welcomed three new lawyers.

Until 2016, the firm was part of Africa Legal Network (ALN), an alliance of top-tier law firms in Africa. Since then, the firm has operated as a fully independent law firm, having very strong ties with major international law firms, particularly with offices based in London, Paris, Johannesburg, Naïrobi and in the US.

The firm’s offices are located at the heart of Bujumbura city in a modern building.

Augustin Mabushi, founder and managing partner, has an extensive knowledge of local law and regulations in the business area. Trained in Paris, Brussels and Washington DC, he has a perfect understanding of the legal challenges that investors are facing when entering Burundi and has designed an appropriate approach to ensure full satisfaction for the firm’s clients.

Areas of practice: The firm’s policy, since its formation, has been to focus on business law, providing consultancy work and assisting investors at the various stages of their business in the country, while at the same time reducing the need for litigation. Over the last 20 years the firm has developed a substantial knowledge of the local business environment and has assisted a myriad of investors and foreign-based companies, as well as individuals starting businesses, with tax, investment incentives and more generally, all key issues regarding the legal environment of their businesses.

Apart from assisting traditional investors (tourism, industry, etc), the firm has provided valuable legal support to companies operating in telecoms, M&A, restructuring and information and communication technology.

The firm has played a significant role in the harmonisation of the Burundian laws to the East African Community (EAC) regulations and has assisted the government of Burundi in setting up new Bills, especially in relation to the common market protocol of the EAC.
