Firm Profile > Bowmans > Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Leading firms Tier 1

Bowmans has made significant progress since launching its Dar es Salaam office in 2017 and fields a team of 'commercially minded lawyers', who 'add a lot of value to a transaction' and provides 'deliverables of a high standard and keeps to transaction timelines'. Despite the tough economic climate, the South Africa headquartered firm's Tanzania team has brought in some significant engagements and developed an impressive market share. The office is tightly integrated with the firm's offices in Nairobi and Kampala. Moreover, the team is increasingly working alongside colleagues in South Africa on project development engagements in Tanzania. Building on the client base of the impressive Wilbert Kapinga, the office has earned particular recognition for its work in the telecoms and mining sectors; Kapinga is 'a good practitioner', who develops 'a good chemistry with clients'. Financial services is another growth industry for the Dar es Salaam office and the firm is particularly successful in attracting instructions from foreign investors, including South African clients and other multinationals. The firm advised South Africa's Absa Bank on its first lending foray into the Tanzanian market, when it provided a $35m loan to the Lake Oil Group. It also assisted South Africa's Nedbank with a loan facility to Afrisian Ginning, the Tanzania-based cotton ginner. Dispute resolution is another core feature of the Tanzania practice with Kapinga and Audax Kameja having strong records in the High Court and Court of Appeal; tax disputes have been especially prevalent for the team. Chris Green 'is an exceptional commercially minded lawyer that will go above and beyond to assist' and 'the quality of his work is of a high standard'; he is recognised for his work in the corporate, finance, competition and regulatory fields.
