Working in close collaboration with colleagues across the firm’s wider international network, from the Cayman Islands to London, Maples Group demonstrates particular expertise in highly complex cross-border deals. Key pillars of the offering include financing transactions involving corporate and fund clients, secured financing transactions, real estate finance work, debt restructurings, capital markets transactions, asset and project finance mandates, and secured lending issues arising from the private wealth space. Active on both the borrower and lender side of transactions, the group is spearheaded by Richard May , whose personal practice focuses on transactions emerging from the natural resources sector. Elsewhere in the group, Christopher Newton specialises in complex restructurings while Ruairi Bourke  is highly adept in debt and equity capital market transactions. Chartered legal executive Chloe Harris also contributes to the practice.

It has, in particular, seen an uptick in matters pertaining to SPAC business combinations and other public acquisitions. The group, which is fronted by Richard May , also assists clients with a broad range of other matters, including traditional M&A, corporate advisory work, private equity matters and restructuring work. Two other key names in the department are Ruairi Bourke , whose practice centres on M&A and joint ventures, and Christopher Newton, who is an expert in non-contentious restructurings and downstream investment work in the funds sector.

At Maples Group, the funds and investment practice primarily assists investment funds and fund managers with fund formations, fund reorganisations and liquidations, and ongoing licensing and regulatory requirements, with particular strength in the private equity and hedge fund spaces. On the regulatory front, the group has seen an uptick in instructions concerning the new closed-ended private investment fund regime, along with advice regarding the implications of the new economic substance regime for investment funds and fund managers. Retained by some of the world’s largest managers, Richard May oversees the department, which also features of counsel Guy Williamson  and Chris Newton , whose practice focuses on downstream investment work in the funds space, as well as fund financing matters.

The various members of the BVI litigation practice at Maples Group are cited as ‘qualified and experienced advocates in their own right’. The group specialises in international commercial litigation, tapping into the firm’s international network, particularly its Hong Kong office. With considerable experience at interlocutory, trial and appellate levels, Adrian Francis  oversees the department, which primarily assists clients with restructuring matters, shareholder disputes, contentious trusts, civil fraud claims, asset tracing litigation and contractual disputes.
