Acting on the borrower and lender side of transactions, the team at Maples Group handles a variety of complex matters relating to asset and project finance work, general banking issues, equity and debt capital markets work, and private equity mandates. The group is especially active in financing transactions involving corporate and funds clients, secured financing issues, real estate finance work, and debt restructurings and reorganisations. Restructuring specialist Christopher Newton recently advised the senior lenders to the Constellation Group - HSBC and Citibank - on the financing and restructuring aspects of loan facilities worth over $1.5bn. The local team in the BVI is led by Richard May, who has a particular focus on the natural resources sector. Other names to note include Ruairi Bourke and of counsel Guy Williamson.
Corporate and commercial Tier 1
At Maples Group, the corporate group advises listed domestic and international entities on a diverse set of matters including M&A, corporate advisory work, equity capital markets issues, private equity matters and restructuring work. Recently, the group has also been involved in a number of large commercial aviation transactions. Led by Richard May, the department has a range of key clients in the energy and natural resources, telecoms and commercial real estate sectors. Ruairi Bourke regularly acts on M&A transactions, restructurings and joint ventures, while Christopher Newton’s practice also includes downstream investment work in the funds sector. Another key practitioner is of counsel Guy Williamson.
Investment funds Tier 1
The funds and investment management team at Maples Group advises on fund formation, maintenance and registration matters, acting for many of the largest financial institutions that use the BVI as a fund domicile. The group also assists with the licensing options available for fund managers, advisers and administrators, as well as other investment business entities aiming to be licensed in the BVI. While the team is highly involved in instructions for open-ended funds, several group members were also involved in the development of the updated closed-ended funds regulatory regime, including BVI practice head Richard May, who acts for some of the world's largest US and UK managers. Chris Newton's practice also encompasses downstream investment work in the funds space and fund financing mandates, and of counsel Guy Williamson is another key practitioner.
‘Richard May is very knowledgeable and provides information in a detailed manner which we appreciate. Guy Williamson also has been stellar.’
