The firm

Vinson & Elkins is one of the oldest and largest international law firms, founded in Houston in 1917 with approximately 700 lawyers located in 16 offices around the world, in Austin, Beijing, Dallas, Dubai, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Moscow, New York, Palo Alto, Richmond, Riyadh, San Francisco, Taipei, Tokyo and Washington DC.

Since the early years of the firm’s existence, it has represented a broad cross-section of the top players in the energy industry and is recognised as a global leader in energy-related transactions and projects. Its lawyers work on many of the most high-profile and complex deals and disputes to take place in the international oil and gas, power, telecoms and infrastructure sectors.

Vinson & Elkins established its Moscow office in 1991, one of the first international law firms to do so, to provide legal advice and counselling on challenging transactions and regulatory issues in the region. Since then, it has represented numerous Russian, US, European and Asian companies on a multitude of energy, natural resources, infrastructure and other projects and transactions in the Russian Federation and throughout the CIS. It has followed closely the many changes in the region’s legal, regulatory and geopolitical landscape and has helped its clients navigate successfully through challenging legal regimes, including the laws and regulations applicable to cross-border transactions and inbound investment. The firm has advised its clients on their investments and business dealings in the region for over 20 years.

Areas of practice

The Russia/CIS practice group is predominantly based in Moscow and London. The practice includes experienced lawyers qualified in Russia, the UK and the US. Vinson & Elkins’ lawyers advise international clients doing business in the Russian Federation and the CIS, including Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. They understand the business, the regulatory framework, the industry ‘norms’ and the contractual structures associated with M&A, joint ventures, infrastructure projects and finance transactions. They have worked together on many transactions and provide an efficient combination of experience in international energy and natural resources transactions and international, English and Russian law and practice.

The office focuses on energy and natural resources; M&A; private equity; corporate/commercial; and finance, including project finance.
