Facio & Cañas > The Legal 500 Rankings
Dispute resolution Tier 1
Handling a wide range of criminal, civil, administrative, commercial and intellectual property litigation, the dispute resolution department at Facio & Cañas is especially skilful in complex damages recovery cases. Federico Torrealba and Rodrigo Oreamuno, who is also an arbitrator and regularly participates in cross-border investment treaty arbitrations, lead the team.
Corporate and M&A Tier 2
Facio & Cañas advises local and foreign clients from a broad range of sectors -such as healthcare and telecoms- on the full scope of corporate matters. The department is particularly active in transactional matters on both local and international level, with a strong focus on acting as local counsel in transactions taking place in Costa Rica; it also advises on market entry, free trade zone regulations, joint ventures and corporate restructuring, among other matters. The team is now led by Carlos Valverde following the September-2109 departure of 'veteran partner' Víctor Garita to Arias.
Intellectual property Tier 2
Facio & Cañas' specialised intellectual property department goes by the name of Faycamark and is dedicated to advising clients on patents, trade marks, copyrights, trade secrets and regulatory law. The team advises on preventive portfolio development and management, and on the contentious side it handles unfair competition and infringement actions. Practice co-heads Jorge Tristán and Milagro Chaves and associate Laura Valverde are the key contacts.
Tax Tier 2
The tax arm of Facio & Cañas, which also goes by the name of Fayca Tax, is led by Adrián Torrealba and José María Oreamuno. The team provides tax guidance for both national corporations involved in foreign investments and international clients doing business in Costa Rica. The department's services include support during government tax audits, tax planning and the tax aspects of corporate transactions.
Labour and employment Tier 3
Facio & Cañas' team specialises in highly complex litigation, handling cases relating to unpaid overtime and the termination of employment relations, among others. The firm also covers day-to-day matters, such as advice on immigration issues, dismissals and compensation packages. Another strong suit of the team led by Luis Sánchez is assisting clients in the sports sector, including both executives and sports players, with labour and employment issues.
Real estate Tier 3
Facio & Cañas advises developers and buyers, as well as a number of private investors. The team assists with land acquisition and sales, due diligence, and obtaining permits and licences. Clients have included Ciudad-Hacienda Los Reyes and Urbanización La Laguna. The names to note are practice co-heads Sergio Solera and Carlos Valverde; however, fellow former co-lead Víctor Garita exited to join Arias.
