  • Acted for Berlian Laju Tankers in claims against Petronas and Schlumberger relating to the detention of the vessel MT “Celosia” and her crew by Thai customs authorities in connection with the alleged smuggling of a cargo of oil by Schlumberger.
  • Acted for Asia Coal Energy Ventures Limited (ACE), the successful first defendant, in a $70m claim brought by Raiffeisen Bank International AG arising out of ACE’s takeover in 2015 of Asia Resource Minerals plc, the indirect owner of PT Berau Coal.
  • Advised the lenders in respect of the financing of the conversion of the LNG carrier Gimi into an FLNG vessel, to be operated by BP on the Greater Tortue / Ahmeyim Project located on the Mauritania and Senegal maritime border.

Squire Patton Boggs has latterly been focused on expanding its offering; a number of key recent hires has strengthened the firm’s capabilities across the entire project life cycle, in a wide range of sectors. April 2020 saw the arrival of energy, natural resources and transportation expert Brian Gordon, formerly of HFW Singapore LLP. In January 2021, the acquisition of Kate Sherrard and senior associate Bernice Chia from Clifford Chance greatly enhanced the group’s maritime expertise. Rounding off the list of new team members, senior associate Jevgenia Serper joined from Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow in April 2021, and highly regarded practitioner Ivan Chia was welcomed from HFW Singapore LLP in September 2021.

The practice at Squire Patton Boggs  has grown significantly in recent years, expanding its portfolio of cases in the region and making senior level lateral-hires to further strengthen its Latin American capability. ‘Exceptional’ investment arbitration and construction dispute specialist John Adam  -previously at Latham & Watkins – joined the Paris office in 2021 to co-lead the firm’s Latin American drive alongside the ‘magnificent’ Paris-based José Ricardo Feris  (a former deputy secretary general of the ICC); and Raúl Mañón  in Miami, who has a strong state-side practice. The addition of Singapore-based public international law specialist Rodman Bundy  (also in 2021), previously with Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP , has added further depth and senior expertise.
