Muñoz Tamayo & Asociados focuses on environmental and collective law, acting for clients from the mining, oil and gas, and energy sectors on the licensing of exploration concessions, as well as in litigation. Juan Manuel Sabogal heads the six-strong practice, with Carlos Mantilla Gómez - the former legal manager of CCX Colombia - also a key member. The team advised GeoPark on entering into legal proceedings to defend oil easements and on the development of an ancillary road. Other mandates included advising Explotaciones Carboníferas Yerbabuena on the judicial process before the Council of the State regarding the capacity of regional environmental authorities to prohibit mining activities in certain environmentally sensitive areas. In the power sector, the firm advised a leading international solar company on the preparation of a proposal for a government auction of long-term energy contracts. Knowledgeable and responsive’, Muñoz Tamayo & Asociados’ practice has particular expertise in the structuring and restructuring of debt across multiple jurisdictions. Felipe Trias, who has significant experience in the sector including executive roles in major Colombian private financial institutions, co-leads the practice with founding partner Diego Muñoz. Recent matters include advising a banking syndicate led by Société Générale in connection with the local aspects of the refinancing of a €750m senior secured financing granted to Applus Services. The team, which welcomed back associate Alonso de Reyes following his LLM in international business and finance law, also continues to advise a multinational gaming company on the restructuring of significant debt. Particularly active in the aviation sector, the practice group at Muñoz Tamayo & Asociados is co-led by founding partner Diego Muñoz Tamayo and Felipe Trías; both also have experience in the highly regulated energy and telecoms sectors. Recent mandates include advising Express del Futuro on the structuring of its participation the public bidding process conducted by Transmilenio for the acquisition of 1,400 replacement buses for the city’s bus-rapid-transit system. The team also successfully assisted Airavata with the bidding process held by aeronautical authority Aerocivil for the upgrading of the lighting system of the north runway of Bogotá’s El Dorado international airport. TMT Tier 4

International companies value Muñoz Tamayo & Asociados’ local expertise and attention to their requirements when entering Colombia’s TMT, start-up and media markets. The five-strong practice, led by Felipe Trías in conjunction with senior associate Fernando Bermúdez, recently acted as lead counsel to Comware in a contractual dispute arising from two government contracts for the development and operation of a state programme to provide network connectivity to remote areas of the country. Having assisted Kushki with establishing a payment platform in Colombia over the last few years, the team continues to act for the company across a wide range of matters. Other mandates included advising a client in relation to potential claims due to a software licensing infraction. Additional clients include Aucerna, Alpha 4 Ventures, Informática Tesi and Digital Bridge Holdings.

The labour practice at Muñoz Tamayo & Asociados handles all aspects of labour and employment law, with a particular niche in sports-related employment matters. With over 21 years’ experience in the sector, Joe Bonilla heads an eight-strong practice, which provides permanent advice to football club Azul & Blanco Millonarios FC, among other clients, including representation in the labour courts.
