Dr. Justin Hill serves as Head of Intellectual Property (UK) and is a Band 1 ranked Patent Attorney and Patent Attorney Litigator with over 25 years of experience in private practice since leaving an in-house role in health care. Having joined Crowell in 2025 from a leadership position in the world’s largest law firm, he has long been recognized as a leader in the field of intellectual property by all of the leading independent legal directories. Justin has advised many of the world’s leading technology companies and has built and managed several leading IP practices.

Known for strategic thinking and international perspectives, Justin and his team can handle anything that touches intellectual property: IP policy, IP audits, IP strategy, patent drafting and filing, portfolio management, competitive intelligence, commercialization, and enforcement of intellectual property rights. Particular strengths include competitor monitoring and IP risk management, generating high-value portfolios, strategic FTO and contentious expertise, dispute strategies, trade secrets, designs, trademarks, and copyright.

Justin is recognized on the prestigious IAM Strategy 300 list of the World’s Leading IP Strategists. He is also indicated to be a Global Leader in IAM’s Patent 1000. Justin uses state of the art technology solutions, including AI-driven software for identifying, optimizing, and valuing a company’s key intangible assets and trade secret registers. A thought leader on the use of intellectual property rights as commercial assets, he excels in crafting IP policies and global strategies, managing global filing programs, providing market insights, identifying revenue opportunities, and managing IP interfaces in the value chain.

Having litigated in numerous jurisdictions, Justin is experienced with IP negotiations and complex contentious matters, including Standard Essential Patents and life sciences projects. His expertise includes infringement and validity opinions; he has a track record of success in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. Justin also handles infringement and invalidity cases before the English courts, other national courts, and the Unified Patent Court (UPC), in which he advocates for his clients with precision and skill.

Alongside his law practice, Justin serves in the partnerships of venture capital firms and as a non-executive director of technology companies. Justin frequently presents and publishes insights, driven by his passions for disruptive tech and supporting high-growth companies. He spends a significant proportion of this time preparing companies for funding rounds at Series A and onwards and preparing portfolio companies for trade sales or listing. In these projects, he conducts intellectual asset discovery, mapping, IP optimization, and de-risking as part of transaction readiness exercises. Justin also performs highly informative target screening and due diligence for technology investors.
