Diversity

Dannemann Siemsen is one of the largest law firms in Brazil, with more than a hundred years of history. We bring together tradition and innovation, experience and a vision of the future.

Diversity is part of our essence. We are a mixture of different nationalities, experiences and social backgrounds and we understand that this is the richness that produces the innovation and creativity that characterise us.

We believe that, as leaders in our field, with the important role of professional training, we must be at the forefront in propagating the values of diversity and inclusion, which are indispensable for the corporate world, not only for them to guide our work internally, but also for them to be disseminated in the field of law.

This is why we invest in a new way of managing this diversity in order to enhance it by developing an inclusive environment and fostering more innovation.

We have thus built the diversity and inclusion programme, the purpose of which is to develop what we already have in terms of diversity and update it as one of the main values of the firm, promoting important and consistent changes in the medium to long term.

Through this programme, we combine tradition with a view to the future, moving towards the new challenges posed by the theme of diversity and inclusion without losing sight of what we consist of.

DIVERSITY AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

Since 2019, Dannemann Siemsen has created the Diversity and Sustainability Committee with the intention of promoting diversity and inclusion as a positive value within the firm. The Committee is a permanent working group composed of top management, partners, marketing, human resources and other employees.

A function of the Diversity and Sustainability Committee is to multiply the Programme, by debating, monitoring and proposing initiatives related to diversity and inclusion at the firm.

THE PROGRAMME

DIVERSITY PROGRAMME

The Diversity and Inclusion Programme, structured in partnership with Conectar Diversidade e Inclusão [Diversity and Inclusion], has, among its objectives, identifying and formalising the initiatives that are already in place in the firm, encouraging discussion on the topic both internally and externally, and preparing new initiatives in order to enhance diversity and build an even more inclusive environment. Our main focus is on issues related to gender, race, sexuality, people with disabilities and generational diversity.

The initial phase of the programme included the consultants’ familiarisation with the various parts of the firm, meetings with the Human Resources department in order to map the firm’s organisation, meetings with the senior management and the team responsible for implementing the programme to establish its guidelines and bases, and the preparation of a customised questionnaire to carry out the Diversity Assessment.

DIVERSITY PROGRAMME ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2023

-          Diversity and inclusion training workshop for 98% of employees and partners

-          Socio-demographic census, answered by 80% of employees and partners

-          Publication with our guidelines and commitment to diversity and inclusion

DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT

The diversity assessment was prepared by means of interviews with representatives from various parts of the office, in order to produce an overview of the current situation, with its potentials and obstacles, from which it will be possible to outline the strategies for diversity management in the medium to long term.

Workshops on the topic were held for the Diversity and Sustainability Committee, comprehensively addressing issues such as the perception and confrontation of unconscious biases, in order to review recruitment, selection and professional development procedures, dimensions of diversity and the specific content of ethnicity and race, gender and LGBTI+ relations, in order to build an exchange of knowledge surrounding the main issues that challenge diversity management.

As a further step, the firm’s internal census were carried out to ascertain the number of female, black, LGBTI+ and disabled people, as well as other data relating to the composition of the organization. The census is be part of a broader process of mobilizing and raising awareness of employees about issues related to diversity.

CAMP MANGUEIRA

The partnership between Dannemann Siemsen and CAMP Mangueira helps adolescents and young people find their path to work, overcoming family problems and social vulnerabilities.

We know that adolescents and young people who live with social vulnerabilities have many difficulties being inserted into the job market, because of prejudice, lack of education, experience, place of residence and other attributes that end up working as a hindrance to entering the job market.

We offer them the first opportunity of traineeship/learning and many pursue a career at the firm.

With this, we aim to identify the employees inserted into the firm originating from the CAMP Mangueira Learning Programme, map the economic and social contributions of Dannemann Siemsen in the lives of its employees, as well as the social vulnerabilities overcome throughout their careers at the firm.

We at Dannemann Siemsen are proud to have social responsibility in our DNA. We work for a more inclusive society that respects differences. This is also the central objective of our newest partner, the Inclusion in Law Project.

Developed by the Centre for the Study of Law Firms (CESA), the Inclusion in Law Project is a partner of institutions such as PUC-RJ, USP and Mackenzie, and aims to promote an increase in the participation of black people in the world of law, contributing to reduce inequalities and discrimination.

Through this partnership, we will work together for a more diverse and inclusive practice of law, promoting the participation of these young people in our selection procedures and helping to train them for the legal market. For this, our partners will take part in meetings for professional guidance (mentoring), giving all the necessary support for them to develop in the best possible way. In addition, they will have access to all courses offered by the Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) and will be exempt from registration fees. At the end of each course, they will receive diplomas.
