Career

Luis Dates is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Buenos Aires office, where he heads the Dispute Resolution and Public Law practice groups, and is in charge of the Dispute Resolution and Public Law practice groups. He also coordinates both practices in the Firm's Latin America Offices (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela).

He has broad experience advising local and foreign companies across a range of public and administrative law issues, particularly doing business with the national government, provinces, municipalities and state-owned enterprises. He also assists and represents clients in complex and multidisciplinary litigation, and is active in domestic and international arbitration.

Luis is a mediator and arbitrator for the Private Center of Mediation and Arbitration. He has written books and numerous articles for various legal publications on topics related to his field. He is also a professor at the School of Law of the University of Buenos Aires and at the School of Legal and Social Sciences of the Museo Social Argentino University.

Practice focus

Luis focuses his practice on civil and commercial litigation and arbitration. He also advises on administrative and public law advisory and regulatory disputes, mainly in highly regulated industries such as energy, mining and infrastructure as well as pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

Personal

Acted as co-arbitrator in an arbitration with the seat in Buenos Aires under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, in a claim for sums of money for nonpayment of the price under a share purchase agreement between individuals and an oil services company. Represented a Spanish construction company in an arbitration at law before the General Arbitration Court of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange against an Argentine state-owned company for claims of higher costs in an EPC contract for a combined cycle power plant.
