About
Advocates Smith Taubitz Unsworth Ltd (ASTU) is a specialist Isle of Man litigation practice built for disputes.
Litigation is not one department among many at ASTU: it is the firm’s entire focus. Its Advocates act across the full spectrum of contentious work, from complex international commercial disputes, insolvency, asset recovery and financial crime to serious criminal proceedings, family litigation, inquests, personal injury and medical negligence.
The Isle of Man has a fused legal profession, with Manx Advocates performing the roles undertaken by both solicitors and barristers in England and Wales. That model is central to ASTU’s approach. The Advocate who develops the strategy, knows the evidence and advises the client is also equipped to argue the case in court. The firm’s lawyers regularly appear at every level of the Manx courts, from the Summary Court through to the High Court and Staff of Government Division.
ASTU combines the agility and personal service of a boutique with the depth of experience required for substantial and sophisticated litigation. The firm acts for international businesses, insolvency practitioners, financial institutions, insurers, professional services firms and high-net-worth individuals, frequently working alongside leading UK and international law firms and King’s Counsel. It is equally committed to individuals facing serious criminal allegations, family disputes, injury or other litigation where the consequences are intensely personal.
Its commercial disputes practice encompasses high-value and cross-border litigation, insolvency and corporate disputes, trusts, fraud, asset recovery, freezing and restraint orders, enforcement and contentious regulatory matters. The team has particular strength in financial crime and Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings and regularly advises businesses and individuals dealing with regulatory investigations, sanctions and enforcement issues.
ASTU also has substantial expertise beyond commercial litigation. Its Advocates undertake serious and complex criminal defence work; matrimonial finance and children proceedings, including cross-border disputes and Hague Convention cases; major inquests, including motorsport fatalities; claimant and defendant personal injury and medical negligence litigation; employment disputes; and specialist road traffic work for insurers and UK solicitors.
The firm’s strength lies in its people and its collaborative approach. Cases are not confined within rigid departmental boundaries. Advocates work together, drawing on the specialist knowledge and courtroom experience across the team, with Director-level involvement and supervision where required without unnecessary duplication of cost.
ASTU’s senior team includes Advocates recognised for complex commercial and regulatory litigation, financial crime, serious criminal defence and family law. The firm also has accredited mediators within the team and Advocates appointed to sit judicially as Acting Deemsters (Judges) of the Isle of Man High Court.
That breadth is reinforced by a deliberate commitment to developing the next generation of Manx litigators. Junior Advocates and trainees gain meaningful exposure to substantial cases, clients and courtroom work from an early stage, creating genuine strength in depth rather than a practice dependent upon a small number of senior lawyers.
ASTU is deliberately different: a focused, independent litigation boutique offering strategic advice, experienced advocacy and a highly personal service to clients facing disputes in the Isle of Man.
