The firm: The desire to create a top-class boutique law firm inspired managing partner Mohamed Ridza to set up Messrs. Mohamed Ridza & Co. (MRCO), together with his current partners, in June 2005, with a total manpower of five people. Now it has grown to four highly qualified partners,  11 dedicated lawyers and nine staff. MRCO is a leading firm specialising in various areas – in particular the areas of banking and finance, capital markets, construction, corporate and commercial law, foreign investment, M&A, oil and gas, privatisation, projects, real estate and telecommunication. It also boasts one of the largest legal teams in Islamic finance. Located in Kuala Lumpur, the firm has represented many local and international clients, including government agencies, private and public sectors.

The firm has been involved in some of Malaysia’s largest and most complex corporate and financing transactions involving corporate and commercial law and mergers and acquisition of both local and international companies, and has won many accolades for its involvement in many cutting-edge transactions. The firm also has a very close working relationship with many local and internationally based financial institutions, multinational corporations and public listed companies.

The partners in the firm are also active in presenting talks locally and internationally and they have authored a few books, namely The Law & Life of Fintech, Law & Practice of Islamic Banking & Finance (editions 1, 2 and 3), the Sukuk Islamic Capital Market series and Independent Directors – Perceptions, Roles and Responsibilities.

Areas of practice: Mohamed Ridza Abdullah has advised on a wide variety of corporate, financing and commercial matters including mergers and acquisitions of listed and non-listed entities, listings of public companies, joint venture and consortium agreements involving foreign and multinational companies, venture capitalist transactions, capital markets and real estate projects. He also advises broadly on major state and federal privatisation projects particularly in the oil and gas industry and property development. Being trained in Shari’ah as well as common law, Ridza leads one of the largest teams of Islamic finance in his firm where the firm has advised clients locally and internationally on various aspects of Islamic banking and finance utilising various Shari’ah concepts.

Hafidah Aman Hashim advises on matters related to both Islamic and conventional banking and finance and also advises foreign and local companies in respect of various corporate and commercial matters including mergers and acquisitions of listed and non-listed entities, listings of public companies, joint ventures, consortium agreements involving foreign and multinational companies, leasing agreements and conveyancing matters. She also advises and conducts due diligence investigations in respect of acquisitions, IPOs, restructuring and other corporate exercises.

Shafika Alsagoff has advised on a wide variety of Islamic banking, real estate and corporate commercial matters and has contributed articles related to developments in Malaysia’s capital markets and Islamic banking. Being trained in Shari’ah as well as common law, Shafika has advised clients on various aspects of Islamic banking and finance utilising various Shari’ah concepts such as Bai’ Bithaman Ajil, Ijarah, Istis’na, Murabahah and the issuance of Islamic securities under the Shari’ah principles of Bai’ Bithaman Ajil, Ijarah and Murabahah.

Mohamad Nazran Basirun advises foreign and local companies in respect of various corporate and commercial matters of listed and non-listed entities, including mergers and acquisitions, listings of public companies, joint ventures and project related matters with specialisation in oil and gas contracts. He also advises foreign and local companies in matters relating to offshore business activities especially through Labuan which includes advising clients on the setting up of public or private funds, advising on offshore leasing, offshore trusts etc.
