The firm: Established in 1989, S.S. Rana & Co. is a premier intellectual property and corporate law firm having a pan-India presence. It is one of the very few IP firms registered as 'Advocate-on-Record' (AOR) with the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India which equips it to represent clients' rights from the Lower courts to the Apex Court.

For more than three decades the firm has been facilitating its clients in protecting, enforcing, defending and monetising their intellectual property rights in India and the world over. Areas of practice: The firm also has an excellent corporate practice which continues to be a powerhouse of high value, complex corporate advisory matters. The team has expertise and in-depth knowledge in all areas of corporate practice which is combined with an astute understanding of the business and commercial agreements. The practice includes legal assistance to domestic and international clients across industries offering legal services and consultation on contracts and agreements, franchising and licensing, advertising, labelling and packaging, food, consumer protection, competition law, cyber laws, environment, media and entertainment, labour, E-commerce, IT, foreign trade and custom, MSME registration, real estate, JV agreements, foreign direct investment, labour law disputes, legal metrology laws, arbitration etc.

IP facilitator for start-up companies: For facilitating Start-ups’ Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP), a scheme was introduced by Indian Patent Office which was put into force up to March 31, 2017 and is now being further extended for a period of three years in order to envisage to facilitate protection of patents, trademarks, designs of Start-Ups. The empanelment of facilitators has been done by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (“CGPDTM”).

The managing partner of the firm, Mr Vikrant Rana is registered as IP facilitator with the Indian Patent Office to provide start-up companies with a range of services related to the protection and commercialization of their intellectual property rights. In the past couple of years, the firm has assisted more than 23 clients who are start-ups.

Mr Vikrant Rana is also actively involved in sensitizing awareness on intellectual property rights in India and is associated with several government organizations including TIFAC, ISRO, Department of Science and Technology, Patent Facilitating Centers (PFC), Patent Information Centers (PIC), FICCI, Ministry of Small-Scale Industries (MSSI), CII, WIPO, TERI, IIM Ahmedabad, Banaras Hindu University, etc. and is a frequent speaker and panelist in seminars and conferences conducted by these organizations. Mr Rana is also an External Expert - Law/ Patent in IIC (Institution Innovation Council) at the TERI School of Advanced Studies.

ISO certifications: having embraced the technological advancements and changes in legal practices over the years, the firm is one of the select few law firms in the country to be awarded with the ISO 27001: 2013, a global standard for Information Security Management System.. The firm has also been awarded with ISO 9001:2015, a global standard for Quality Management System. The firm has significantly invested in IT systems for systemic file management and retrieval of client information while maintaining the highest degree of data security and confidentiality.

Thought leadership: The firm also has a thought leadership team and our dedication to research has been instrumental in creating thought leadership in various areas of law and public policy. IP4Kids- A CSR Initiative of S.S. Rana & Co: IP4Kids, is a CSR initiative of the firm, to build a fully-fledged multilingual interactive website for the purposes of spreading awareness about intellectual property and innovation among the younger generation. The firm aims to stimulate in the young minds of children, a culture of innovation, and to inculcate in them a respect for the fruits of one’s labor, as it firmly believes that, “when one creates IP, he respects IP, as he expects others to respect his IP as well”.

The firm’s endeavor is to provide a forum in which the relevant stakeholders continue to identify, discuss and elaborate creative solutions for building respect for intellectual property. Its workshops have focused on interactions with students, teachers and young grassroots innovators, and in the past the firm has received support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Through this initiative, partners and associates at the firm actively participate in IP sensitization events like the Indian Innovation Festival 2018, where the team interacted with students, teachers and young grassroots innovators. The initiative also received support from WIPO in the form of its publications being distributed at the Festival organized by the National Science Centre, New Delhi.
