Anderson Mori & Tomotsune (AMT) regularly provides pro bono legal services to public interest foundations, community groups, and non-profit organizations, and contributes to bar associations, governmental agencies and educational institutions, as well as other entities focusing on issues related to human rights, education, the environment, health, the arts, LGBT rights and social investment.

The partners in charge of pro bono activities include: Eiichiro Nakatani, Ryu Umezu, Kenji Hirooka and Koichi Saito.

Below are some examples of AMT’s pro bono work:

  • Having joined the Japan Association for Refugees’ Pro Bono project as an official partner, AMT collaborates with the Association to support refugees in the process to obtain refugee status.
  • AMT was awarded a Gold Prize in the “PRIDE Directory,” which is the first directory in Japan to evaluate the LGBT efforts of companies and other parties. The directory was created by the voluntary organization “work with Pride”.
  • AMT has continued to assist refugees in the process to apply for refugee status. In multiple cases, applicants who were assisted by AMT have received an official refugee determination.
  • As a Gold Sponsor, AMT supported the 8th Universal Children’s Day Charity Walk & Run, which was organized by Human Rights Now.
  • AMT supported ARUN Seed, an NPO organization, in making social investments into Indian start-up ventures. The business of those start-ups has a significant social impact because it creates new jobs for women and improves their salaries.
  • Koichi Saito, a partner at AMT, attended the round-table discussions titled “Current Status and Issues on the Public-Interest Activities” as a member of the Public-Interest Activities Steering Committee of the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association. The content of the discussions were published in a special article of the Ichiben Bulletin (March 2018 Issue, No. 540).
