Commercial litigation: Newcastle Tier 1

Muckle LLP ‘offers soundly judged, rational and calculated advice’ and handles a wide range of commercial disputes by utilising advanced technology, with one example being the technology-assisted review software used during the disclosure stages. The team is commended for its specialist litigation expertise in the technology, music and media sectors, where IP litigator George Festing is a key contact. Department head Susan Howe has experience acting in multi-party and cross-border proceedings, placing a particular focus on financial asset-tracing issues and freezing orders. Leah Heatley assists contracting authorities, utilities and bidders with challenging public procurement decisions.

Practice head(s):

Muckle’s dispute resolution team is unique in the region due to the quality of its advice and service. The lawyers are strategic, commercial and always prepared to go the extra mile for clients.

Muckle is clearly a forward-thinking, business-minded and tech-focused law firm that I would recommend to any business. Its advice is always practical and personal, brought by genuine specialists in IP, IT and corporate matters.

The litigation team at Muckle offers soundly judged, rational and calculated advice. Its expertise and guidance helped us through a challenging litigation process with an ultimately successful conclusion, notable for the measured and expert approach that was applied to the final stages of the negotiation. Nothing is too much trouble and the team provides a highly efficient and detailed service.

I found the team at Muckle able to adapt and anticipate situations which could negatively affect our business. Ultimately, the lawyers became a key member of my commercial team, minimising business risk and helping position us for the best outcome. This is above and beyond what I have previously experienced with legal support.

Susan Howe is exceptionally clever and strategic. She just seems to make things happen, regardless of how difficult the situation is.

Susan Howe leads a multi-talented and highly charismatic team which has expertise across multiple commercial fields.

George Festing has been my main point of contact throughout the last 12 months. He leads by example and naturally adapts his approach to suit the situation. George is a calming influence on even the most stressful of situations, thanks to his ability to distil complex IP and IT issues and principles into practical, relatable and progressive solutions.

Leah Heatley was exceptional in terms of her dedication and support, working out of hours and during festive holidays to assist with a particularly urgent issue. This was not demanded, nor did the issue directly affect her, yet she did this because she understood the risk and urgency that we found ourselves in. This went above and beyond what we expected and the support was always professional.

Practice head(s):

Muckle’s team was visible throughout the process of our transaction, working collaboratively with all key stakeholders towards its completion. The team’s advice was commercial and pragmatic.

The team is considerate, understanding and time-efficient.

The team members kept us informed and up to speed with the progress through the whole process. They also advised us on any potential problems before they even occurred.

The level of communication and clarity are second to none.

We collaborated with Muckle on a client’s project and found the team to be very capable, and able to anticipate our needs and to smooth the path of a complex transaction. The team’s experience with matters involving the Takeover Panel shone through, to the benefit of our client.

Matthew Walsh is always available to discuss ongoing engagements and matters of wider interest to the client. Everything he has delivered has been timely and of very high quality.

I appreciate the depth of knowledge and attention to detail of senior associate Amy Wanless. Her wealth of information and contacts got our business headed in the right direction from the moment we registered in the UK. As a business relocating from the US, this is especially important to us. She took the time to understand our business, the mission behind it, and the future vision for it.

Our commitment to CSR, diversity and equality is fundamental to our culture – it’s not something we do, it’s something we are.

At the heart of our business lies a genuine passion for our region and a deep desire to have a positive impact on our community. From giving back to local causes to driving change that promotes equality inside and outside our
business, being a responsible business is important to us.

Each year we donate 1% of our annual profits to our charitable fund. And that soon adds up; we’ve donated over £560,000 to local causes offering support in three key areas – young people, disadvantage, and social mobility, as well as
supporting causes close to the hearts of our people.

Our approach isn’t limited to our fund. We have a huge amount of talent in our business, and we encourage our people to give their time and skills to local charities, schools and community organisations who can benefit from their practical support and expertise. Whether that’s our lawyers carrying out pro-bono work or our employees using their 2 days paid volunteering leave to help local organisations.

Social and environmental sustainability runs deep through everything we do, and we’re committed to using our resources as efficiently as possible to reduce our environmental impact. Our award-winning team promote environmental policy and practices internally and externally. We run regular events, publish energy eNews, provide social media coverage and work
with local councils on their net-zero initiatives to promote in-home sustainability.

We’re committed to investing in the health and wellbeing of our people, and as we learn to live, work and interact in a different way it’s important that we consider innovative solutions that reach all our staff. As a company we’ve been working Agile for over 3 years now, giving our employees the freedom to work as they work best has had a really positive impact on employee engagement and productivity. Remote working also brings with it less congestion on our roads, more public transport capacity for those who need to travel, and cleaner air for all of us.

We’re a people business, and we want the best people to work for us. You can’t really be certain of finding the best people unless you give everyone a fair chance, no matter their background. We support equal opportunities for all and in 2017 started the UK’s first regional solicitor apprenticeship programme. Now aspiring lawyers can earn while they learn and qualify without the burden of rising university costs.

This is all part of a broader approach to responsible business practice which includes work on environmental and social mobility agendas and a commitment to being a healthy, happy and agile workplace.

For more information on what we’re doing to be a responsible business, please check out our Corporate Social Responsibility Review.
