Its private client team are real experts in trusts and tax and the contentious team deals with the most heavyweight cases with real experience and expertise, dovetailing brilliantly with its family department which is of course very high profile. Richard Manyon is a force of nature -extremely clever, very good with clients and excellent at tactics. The addition of the hugely experienced and expert Jessica Henson to the team has been a great boost. Both are pragmatic as far as their clients are concerned but more than capable of putting up a good fight when they need to.’

‘Jessica Henson – Jessica is a super talented lawyer with incredible attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure. Our paths have crossed through work and through conferences attended and in both Jessica is a true professional. Rebecca Moseley – a rising talent, calm under pressure. Richard Manyon – razor sharp and extremely bright.’

Richard Manyon, Jessica Henson and Rebecca Moseley. We have worked both with and in opposition to PHB. PHB’s lawyers all have excellent industry relevant experience/expertise. This means that, in each case, they deploy carefully thought through positions or strategies in a measured way, whilst being tough when they need to be. By adopting such an approach, they gain not just the trust of their clients but also the respect of their opposition and the ear of the Court. It is an effective approach which leads to excellent client outcomes.’

‘We have done a lot of work with Jessica Henson. She is always a pleasure to work with and brings a great energy to each case. She is hardworking, has excellent technical ability and interpersonal skills and rapidly identifies what the important issues are. As a consequence, she quickly gains the trust of her clients, they realise that she is committed to their cause. We have also worked with Richard Manyon. He is an excellent professional. He is a good communicator, who is kind to clients but tough with the opposition. Rebecca Mosely is one to watch for the future.’

Other key lawyers:

Baroness Fiona Shackleton; Ian Airey; Simon Beccle; Ben Parry-Smith; Matthew Booth; Nick Manners; Catherine Costley; Emily Foy; Emily Foy; Sarah Williams ; Fiona Brown; Katie Parkes; Luke Scarratt

Fiona Shackleton. Her dedication to the case and the client is unparalleled. She is always available. It is this that other clients would value – that sense of being a client who really matters and who will always be given the best attention. This is supported by having teams of different disciplines who can be brought into the case as necessary. Fiona’s ‘sense’ for case strategy is extraordinary. At key points in the case she will see an opportunity or a need to change tack. Such decisions can ‘make’ a case‘.

‘A first rate team with excellent lawyers at every level for every type of case. One of the country’s leading firms specialising in family law. The cases are perfectly prepared with every attention to detail. Clients receive a Rolls Royce service. There are many stand out individuals in this team. Fiona Shackleton (obviously), Philip McGuirk and Rebecca Cockcroft to name but three of the seniors. Rebecca Cockcroft is the new joint head of the family team and is an extremely accomplished family lawyer. She cares deeply about her clients and offers the best strategy to achieve their desired outcome. Also Emily Foy is one of the best senior associates around – she has excellent client care skills and has a great ability to stay calm when tensions are running high‘.

It has a wealth of talent at every level and provides a Rolls Royce service. Baroness Shackleton in truly peerless. Her reputation and achievements are second to none, and her involvement in a case means that the client can be confident that they have the very best practitioner in the field running the team. Ben Parry-Smith is sharp and thoughtful, with an inventive mind which looks for and finds creative but positive solutions to the cases that he is involved in. Nick Manners is careful balanced and articulate, and can be trusted to tease out the most important and helpful elements in a client’s case. Katie Parkes has an exceptional eye for detail and a prodigious work-rate which enables her to really understand her client‘.

‘Fiona Brown is probably the most intelligent family law solicitor in London: detailed, charming; insightful. Fiona Shackleton is the doyenne of the matrimonial finance world. She has the best clients because she gives the best client care. Her USP is her commitment to her clients, and her team. Her superpower is the ability to get the feel of a case, and the right answer almost immediately. Ben Parry-Smith is a ball of energy, engaging, committed and commercially savvy. Can charm the birds out of the trees, a great skill in this area‘.

‘An excellent old school firm. Matthew Booth is an old head on young shoulders. He has excellent judgment is very calm and measured and so inspires confidence. Philip McGuirk outstandingly good and reflects the principles of the firm. Attentive to detail, careful strategists and offering a Rolls Royce service to clients. Catherine Costley is an absolute star- completely unflappable and with a razor sharp legal mind‘.

‘Arguably the strongest family law firm in the country, the lawyers are involved in the biggest cases and attract the highest level clients. Extraordinary strength in depth. Matthew Booth – the understated star of the team, he combines great intelligence with enormous insight and exceptional client-care skills. Should definitely be considered one of the leading individuals at the firm. Simon Beccle – very astute. Philip McGuirk – incredibly impressive and universally respected. Emily Foy – a future partner without doubt‘.

I deeply respect Sarah Williams who has a very interesting niche practice in all idiosyncratic areas of family law, with a particular focus on fertility law. I have worked with Sarah on some exceptionally high net worth and high profile cases‘.

The stand out associate is Katie Parkes. She is one of the junior members on the team but her contribution has been invaluable. She has a superb command of the detail of the case and often spots a nuance or a point missed by others. She is prodigiously hardworking and has been the backbone of the case. Nick Manners is a calm voice of reason. He understands the case thoroughly. Luke Scarratt is a junior well worth a mention. He is intelligent, strategic and hard working. Definitely a name for the future’.

‘The level of understanding of what was required for a fairly unusual conveyancing transaction to be completed was superb. We were hugely impressed at every stage. Robert Brodrick, Simon Blackburn and Bethany Milchem showed care, adaptability, insight and were entirely sympathetic to our needs and also our sporadic lack of understanding of protocols and requirements as well. In addition, in the face of a series of unexpected problems caused by the seller, they enabled the transaction to go through with the minimum of difficulty. Their creative and sympathetic approach enabled us to successfully negotiate the purchase of this property‘.

‘First-class team work and strength in depth. Simon Blackburn – Great understanding of the issues of landed estates and not one to be fobbed of by pleasantries! Gets to the heart of the matter in the nicest possible way. First class individual, very user friendly!

Strength in depth and a detailed, comprehensive knowledge across the disciplines surrounding the Landed Estate sector including Tax, Estate and succession planning, agricultural and property law and the interconnections between them all. Where a number of firms have the individual skills, PHB possesses the ability to cut across the areas of knowledge and to think and work in 3D. Basil Dixon‘.

‘I know Simon Blackburn well and have great respect for his ability and work ethic‘.

A wealth of ability and expertise combined with a – now – old-fashioned dedication to client service.  James Bacon is a master of all the light and dark arts of the agriculture and estate sector. He leavens his deep knowledge and expertise with a delightful gentle humour, so necessary when wrestling with the complexities. An unbelievably strong team‘.

The team is highly professional and is able to assist on many different workstreams at any one time, always giving relevant and helpful advice. The two individuals I work closely with are Basil Dixon and Clare Hetherington, both of whom work tirelessly to deliver the unique guidance/support needed. Payne Hicks Beach is a full service law firm providing specialist legal services to domestic and international high net worth private individuals and families, family offices and commercial clients. Its offices in Lincoln’s Inn, which it has occupied since its establishment in the 1730s, complement its long and distinguished heritage. The firm is well known for building very strong client relationships, often spanning several generations and for having a thoroughly twenty-first century approach.

The firm’s reputation is built on its family and private client work: it is regarded as one of the very best of the small number of firms in the UK providing these specialist services at the highest level. This capability is matched with a top ranking expertise in key areas of law including: commercial, privacy and media, citizenship and immigration and surrogacy, fertility, adoption and modern family law.

Its expert teams handle complex problems for people across their personal or businesses lives. Whether an individual or a corporate client, the advice will be incisive, straightforward and solution led. Used to working under pressure, often in stressful and sometimes emotional situations, our lawyers handle difficult issues sensitively and are completely focused on protecting their clients’ interests. Time is taken to understand clients’ needs: whether advising individual clients objectively but sensitively to suit their particular circumstances or making sure the business and commercial realities that commercial clients face are understood in order to provide the right advice.
Much of the firm’s work is international, arising from the US, Scandinavia, Middle East, Far East, Russia, Africa, Switzerland and other European countries. Its clients include: high net worth and affluent individuals and their families (UK and international), landed estate owners, entrepreneurs, trustees, fiduciaries and family offices, family businesses, private and listed companies, charities, schools, financial institutions and professional practices.

The firm’s culture and commitment to outstanding client service is embodied in its structure and collaborative approach, ensuring the delivery of seamless advice across all practice areas.

Types of work undertaken: Payne Hicks Beach’s key practice areas include: private client, family, corporate, employment, dispute resolution, privacy and media law, sports law, property, property litigation, landed estates and agriculture, citizenship and immigration, surrogacy, fertility and modern family, education and advising vulnerable clients.

The private client department is recognised as one of the best in the UK. The family law department has unmatched expertise in all areas of family and matrimonial law, including Part III claims (where divorces take place abroad, and financial matters are resolved in the UK), pre- and post-nuptial agreements, the treatment of pre-acquired and inherited wealth, and the complex issues involved when children are removed from the home jurisdiction and implications of the Civil Partnership Act. Family law is an increasingly complex area on which the team is renowned for its unrivalled experience guiding clients through difficult and emotional times. Bespoke specialist advice is also offered in the rapidly evolving area of surrogacy, fertility, adoption and modern family matters. Members of the department belong to Resolution, the SRA’s Family Law Accreditation Scheme and The International Academy of Family Lawyers.

It is known for advising on complex contractual whistleblowing or discrimination issues that are often very high value or of significant public interest for senior individuals, and for employers across a wide cross-section of industries.

Everyday life and commercial dealings can lead to unwelcome disputes and, as experts, the team makes sense and resolves all types of complex problems.

The privacy and media department specialises in managing and protecting client reputations through its extensive experience and intimate understanding of how the media and other publishers work. Additionally, the team is experienced in appeals and judicial review applications within the immigration context. In the ever-changing world of immigration, the team understands the importance of staying abreast of the continual changes in immigration rules and policy.

The landed estates and agriculture team has a depth of experience which enables them to provide a seamless and wide-ranging service to landowners. Payne Hicks Beach is one of the few London firms that remain fully committed to an agricultural practice. The team advises on key factors such as tax, finance, investment, succession and the structuring of property ownership. The Lex 100 Verdict

A historic firm situated in picturesque Lincoln’s Inn, Payne Hicks Beach is a quality outfit which is not left in the past. The London firm provides ‘complex, high-profile cases whilst allowing us to maintain a work/life balance’. A current trainee comments, ‘the size of the firm enables direct involvement with the substance of a case and a high level of responsibility, whilst working with some of the best minds in the country’. Known for private client and family law among other personal legal services, Payne Hicks Beach also has strong dispute resolution and commercial practices. ‘I had a particular interest in private client and family law; the size of the firm and speaking to past trainees also helped me to choose’. The small intake allows for individual attention for each trainee, plus ‘an excellent friendly culture and good spread of seats. With only one trainee per seat, you get a lot of good quality work and exposure to cases and other fee earners’. The firm's culture impresses from the first interaction: ‘the interview process felt like they were trying to get to know us as individuals to decide if we would be a good fit for the firm, rather than being impersonal’. It continues throughout the training contract, as one trainee reminisces: ‘learning the Jingle Jive over Zoom with various members of the firm and their families as part of the firm's festivities’ was certainly memorable! With a solid training reputation, interesting practice areas and an enviable location, Payne Hicks Beach has a lot to offer.
