Career
Steve Ruffle, Co‑Founder of Litica, has been a specialist underwriter in the After‑the‑Event (ATE) insurance market since 2008. Before moving into the insurance sector, Steve trained and qualified as a solicitor at a publicly listed law firm, giving him a strong foundation in legal analysis, commercial disputes, and litigation strategy. This early professional experience continues to inform his underwriting approach, enabling him to evaluate risk with a dual legal and commercial perspective that is highly valued within the litigation‑risk industry.
For more than 15 years, Steve has focused exclusively on commercial litigation across a wide spectrum of disputes, including complex contractual claims, professional negligence matters, group actions, and high‑value media litigation. He is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading underwriters in the media litigation space, a reputation built on both technical expertise and a longstanding track record of working with some of the country’s most sophisticated claimant practices.
Prior to co‑founding Litica, Steve led successful commercial ATE underwriting departments at two well‑established insurance providers. In these roles, he was instrumental in developing innovative ATE insurance products, refining underwriting strategy, and building strong partnerships within the litigation funding ecosystem. His leadership contributed to significant growth in those departments and helped establish market standards that continue to influence ATE underwriting practices.
Over the course of his career, Steve has developed a substantial and trusted network of leading UK law firms, barristers’ chambers, and third‑party funders. This network reflects both the high regard in which he is held across the industry and his commitment to advancing best practice in litigation‑risk management. His ability to collaborate with lawyers, counsel, funders, and insurers has positioned him as a central figure in the development of integrated litigation‑risk solutions within the UK market.
