Career
Carlos Hugo is a lawyer specialized in Corporate / M&A, Advisory, and Labour Law, with more than 20 years of experience supporting organizations through complex transactions, strategic governance decisions, and workforce matters. He brings a rare combination of in-house leadership, international exposure, and deal-oriented practice, helping clients align legal execution with business objectives.
He served as Legal Affairs Manager and HR Manager for Xerox Colombia, and later as Senior Counsel for Bayer’s Andean Region, roles that strengthened his practical approach to risk management, contracting, compliance, and people-related strategy. His background allows him to advise with an operator’s mindset—anticipating business constraints, negotiating efficiently, and delivering solutions that work beyond the page.
Carlos Hugo also developed a distinctive China-facing profile. He lived in the People’s Republic of China, studied Mandarin Chinese, earned a Master’s degree in Chinese Law from Peking University, and worked as a lawyer at Bayer’s Chinese holding company (Bayer China Ltd.), assisting the Head of Legal for China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This experience gives him an uncommon ability to bridge legal cultures and support cross-border matters involving Chinese counterparties, regional operations, and international corporate structures.
Upon returning to Colombia, Carlos Hugo founded his own law firm and, in 2016, joined MBCR (now Veria Colombia) as a Partner, where he advises on corporate structuring, M&A transactions, day-to-day legal counsel, and labour strategy with a business-first, execution-focused perspective.
For more than a decade, he has remained closely linked to academia as an undergraduate professor of Contracts Law and Markets Law at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, and as a professor of Business with China at Universidad de La Sabana, contributing to the development of future professionals at the intersection of law, markets, and international business.
