Charan has over 20 years’ experience in all aspects of Family Law; Divorce, Defended Divorce, Nullity, Separation, Cohabitation, Finances, Private Children Law, Child Abduction, Name Change Deeds, Statutory Declarations, Injunctions and Enforcement. She has both Private and Legally Aided clients, with cases in the County Court, Magistrates Court and High Court.
Charan was admitted in 1999 and joined Barrett and Thomson in 2003. She is fluent in Punjabi and also speaks Hindi and Urdu. Charan is also a Resolution member, taking a non-confrontational approach to ensure minimal acrimony for the clients at a very difficult time in their lives. However, always fighting to represent their position and their needs. For those clients who are not eligible for Legal Help/Aid, affordable payment plans are also considered.
Charan specializes in Divorce, Finances and Private Children Law, with a proven track record in these fields. In relation to Divorce and Finances, she advises in respect of complex Divorces, high worth and complex financial issues, including; Financial Remedy, Section 37 Proceedings (Freezing Assets), Interveners, Children Act: Schedule One, Foreign and Inherited assets and TOLATA.
Charan has acted in relation to several contested Divorce matters involving issues of ‘Jurisdiction’ and ‘Forum Conveniens’. Re SK v RR, In the Matter Of (Divorce: Forum Conveniens) [2024] EWHC 1418. Charan successfully represented the client in Divorce proceedings contested on the issue of jurisdiction. The Judge dismissed the other party’s application for a Stay of the UK proceedings and ordered the other party to take steps to withdraw proceedings overseas and pay client’s costs.
Her extensive experience in the area of Private Children Law proceedings, includes all Section 8 Orders; Child Arrangement Orders (Live With/Spend Time With), Prohibited Steps Orders, Specific Issue Orders, Abduction, Appeals and Jurisdictional/International issues, including safeguarding contact arrangements abroad.
In relation to Domestic Violence, Charan advises and is often referred clients from various DV Agencies, including; Dash, Sewak Housing, Hestia, Women’s Aid and local Refuges. She has links with TVP to obtain DV evidence swiftly for Legally aided clients. Often representing fragile, vulnerable clients or those who are victims of DV.
Over the years Charan has trained a number of Trainees/Paralegals and often assists some of the other/Junior Solicitors at the firm.
