Interview with…

Advocate Hiren Mistry, Principal

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Mistry Law from your competitors?

When I established Mistry Law, I felt that there was a definite gap in the market for a barrister’s chambers style of law firm in Jersey, which offered unrivalled service to a small number of clients.  The idea was to build key relationships, where Mistry Law became part of the client’s professional team on a long-term basis; almost like having your own in-house legal team.

What sets Mistry law apart from its competitors is that there are no conflicts of interest, as Mistry Law is a truly independent firm.  The principal deals with the client’s needs on a day-to-day basis, with continuity and without a constantly changing team.  Specialist barristers and/or other professionals are used when needed, which means that the client’s team is focused and specialised to their needs and above all, to Mistry Law our clients are central to everything that we do.

What claims do you see growing in the next 12 months in Jersey?

Jersey is an international finance centre and as with most of the world, output and cases have been impacted by Covid-19.  The Covid-19 restrictions are now lifting, Government funding is being stopped and this will have a real impact on insolvencies, debt recovery and breach of trust cases in Jersey.  With tensions mouthing in the Ukraine, I also expect to see an increase in actions brought by the HM Attorney General in Jersey to police sanctions.

Litigation is a costly business and so I expect to see an increase in cases being settled by Alternative Dispute Resolution methods such as mediation and/or arbitration, however, I also expect to see an increase in more aggressive litigation and the use of injunctive relief to secure assets from being dissipated or moved outside the reach of the claimants.

What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Mistry Law has resisted the urge to expand since it was established, instead focusing on building its specialisms in key areas.  It has also built key relationships with other professionals, such as Queens Counsel, Junior Barristers and accountants, to offer specialised advice when needed.

We have also modernized our internal processes where there is a massive push to take advantage of the use of technology both procedurally and for our clients, to offer innovative, strategic and forward-thinking solutions to the way that we operate and interact with our client base, opponents and the Courts.

What technology has the firm invested in recently?

Form day one, Mistry Law has invested in using a cloud-based case management system to work from, which has dramatically reduced the need for paper.  Our IT team are at the forefront of developing new IT based programmes to make working more efficient and cyber  security is something that we also invest in heavily for remote working from wherever we are in the world.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Mistry Law believes that it is essential for any business, especially a law firm, to provide stability and strategic direction to all of our clients.  Dispute Resolution is our speciality, and there is a need for a strong and integrated team, which does not change, unlike with our competitors.  Our clients have the comfort of knowing that their matter is being conducted by the firm’s principal, and they have a say in choosing external advisors if needed, to create the team of experts to best guide them through their matter.

Our clients also expect strategic direction to reinforce their trust in Mistry Law, which includes offering unique and novel legal arguments, keeping up to date with changing legislation and giving the client the assurance that the advice provided, and action taken is best for their circumstances.

In the next 3 years, we aim to increase the number of leading cases that we are involved in.  Mistry Law aims to be the go-to law firm in Dispute Resolution in Jersey, building on its offering of bespoke cost effective advice and representation.
