Tax Tier 1

At BDO Law, the tax practice group is led by experienced practitioners Janis Zelmenis and Vita Liberte. The firm advises on the full range of tax services, including corporate and individual tax planning, asset placement planning, compliance, audits and due diligence. Banking, finance and capital markets Tier 3

BDO Law represented state-owned finance institution Altum in a complex dispute with two companies which were beneficiaries of aid granted by the client. The firm excels in handling contentious cases which involve alternative investment funds. Other clients include Corporate Finance Bonds. Managing partner Vita Liberte and Janis Zelmenis are key contacts.

Commercial, corporate and M&A Tier 3

Vita Liberte leads the practice at BDO Law, which combines expertise in tax matters with corporate and commercial law. It advised a UK-based real estate developer on the acquisition of another company, including negotiating the shareholders' agreement and other matters. Associate Darta Eglite joined from the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia.

Dispute resolution Tier 3

Led by Vita Liberte, the team at BDO Law is handling a number of disputes for financial institution Altum, including representing the client in complex civil litigation with the previous shareholders of Parex Banka (now Citadele Banka). It also has experience in complex investment disputes. Senior associate Anna Mandel, who led the practice group, joined Marcus, Rosenberg & Diamond LLP  in New York.

EU and competition Tier 3

At BDO Law, senior associate Andis Karklins leads the group; he recently provided competition compliance training to staff at Bosch across the Baltic states. The firm's broad client base includes companies from the retail, telecoms, construction, transport and financial services sectors.

Real estate and construction Tier 4

BDO Law has experience advising local and international clients, including contractors and construction design companies, on extensive real estate projects. The team is led by Vita Liberte and recently advised a Swiss real estate developer on a construction agreement regarding its development of a historical building protected under cultural heritage laws. Senior associate Arturs Surmovics is recommended.

Corporate Social Responsibility

BDO Law has a great interest in and concern for the society we live in and expresses this by contributing to various endeavours that promote health, culture and education. One of our goals is to promote transparency in society and to reduce corruption at national and international levels in politics, in business and mutual relations.

We teach students on various tax and legal issues at universities and colleges. For example, BDO Law associates are giving annual lectures in Art Law to bachelor students from Riga Graduate School of Law. The goal of the course is to introduce students to the history of art law and to identify legal risks and problems in the field of art.

Occasionally, BDO Law provides pro bono services free of charge or for a reduced fee, especially if that helps not only the individual but whole society. One of the recent court cases was broadly discussed in media and has brought attention to problems regarding dual citizenship in Latvia.

BDO Law regularly supports the Latvian Tennis Union, so it could prosper the growth and development of young tennis players who are full of perspective.

For many years in a row BDO LAW associates have been preparing books that contain annotations for Latvian Labour Law. The annotation is based on court practices in Latvia and the EU with practical examples. BDO LAW has given out the books to BA School of Business and Finance, Riga Graduate School of Law, University of Latvia and Jekabpils Agrobusiness College.
