Interview with…
Babajimi Ayorinde, Partner

What do you see as the main points that differentiate The New Practice (TNP) from your competitors?
We are constantly innovating and willing to embrace change in our drive to find tailor-made solutions to our clients’ unique problems. We also have a 24-hr policy, which means our clients can reach us at any time and we’d respond.
Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?
We expect to see geometric growth in Fintech, driven by the desire of the Central Bank of Nigeria to increase financial inclusion and a youthful population that is adept at leveraging technology. Local firms are also attracting more PE investment, which has been a boon for the market.
What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?
Increased focus and training in identified growth areas. We have also hired lawyers with diverse capabilities and experience in the companies we advise, particularly in the tech sector.
Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?
Yes, constantly. We work with leading tech companies in the country and we have expertise and knowledge of not just the local climate but the global one too, so we are a step ahead of these changes.
Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?
We work with a local artist who is doing incredible things. One of our goals was to help him grow his international exposure, which we did with a lucrative deal with the leading sports apparel maker in the world. He also just signed what is touted as the biggest brand sponsorship deal for an African artist with a global bank.
Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?
Some of the laws in our country haven’t yet quite caught up with technological advancements, so we have to help them navigate these waters. So, yes, our clients depend on us for strategic direction. In three years’ time we will be the leading law firm in Fintech and technology.
