Career

John advises on disputes and transactional matters in relation to the trading of energy (oil, LNG and coal) and soft commodities (grain, feed, oilseeds, sugar, cocoa, cotton and coffee).

John handles court proceedings and arbitrations under the rules of the LCIA, SIAC, RSA, SAL, GAFTA, FOSFA, ICA, LMAA, and SCMA. He provides routine ‘firefighting’ support in relation to the performance of sale contracts, charterparties and other commodity related contracts, and he advises on the drafting and negotiation of the terms of such contracts. John also acts as a legal advisor to trade association tribunals.

John started his career at another City law firm, where he trained and qualified into their shipping department in March 2014. A few years later he moved to Singapore to work for another firm’s maritime and international trade team. Upon his return to London in March 2019, John joined Hill Dickinson’s commodities team, where he was made a partner in November 2022.

During his career, John has spent seven months on secondment to an energy trader, where he advised on gas and power trading, and seven months on secondment to a P&I Club, where he advised their charterer and trader members.
