Aviation Tier 2
At Monard Law, Birgitta Van Itterbeek is the key contact for aviation work. Aircraft leasing and financing are core strengths of the practice; Van Itterbeek leads the advice to Equatorial Congo Airlines on its complex cross-border restructuring, and in another matter, assisted longstanding client TUI Airlines Belgium with leasing four B737-800 Max aircraft, marking the first operation of the model in Belgium. Associate Julie Van Nieuwenhove left the firm in December 2017.
Fraud and white-collar crime Tier 2
Tax fraud instructions dominate Monard Law's group's recent workload; misuse of corporate goods and money-laundering matters form other areas of instruction. Christiaan Barbier is very well known for handling high-profile white-collar crime disputes, and Tom Messiaen, Frédéric Lettany, and Pieter Helsen are also key contacts.
The commercial, corporate and M&A team at Monard Law is instructed on a range of transactions for its impressive client roster, which includes Carrefour, Danone and Generali Belgium. The team assisted Simac Techniek with negotiating a purchase agreement for 70% of the shares of Wavetel, as well as with a subscription and shareholders agreement with the majority owner of shares. In another work highlight, Katrien Vorlat led a team advising Dekra Belgium on its acquisition of Allianz Belgium's insurance claims adjusting business. Natalie Ulburghs, Nicole Segers and Kristof Zadora are key names to note. Benoit Samyn and Pieter Van den Broeck were recently promoted to the partnership. Other changes to the team include Maxime Monard's promotion to associate partner.
Environment Tier 3
Monard Law has a strong track record advising applicants and objecting parties on the contentious and non-contentious aspects of environmental permit applications. It also acts for third parties, such as investors investing into target companies, in environmental audits. Other areas of expertise include soil pollution, waste management, environmental taxes and expropriation. The practice is jointly headed by Koen Geelen, France Vlassembrouck and associate partner Wouter Moonen. Recent work includes Geelen, Moonen and senior associate Sarah Jacobs assisting We Are One World - the organiser of the Tomorrowland dance festival - with obtaining all required permits for the event. The team has also advised Group Machiels on obtaining permits for various wind turbine projects. Counsel Bernard Vanheusden is another active practitioner in the group. Other clients include the City of Mechelen, the City of Hasselt, RSK Group and Democo.
Industry focus: energy Tier 3
Monard Law's practice draws on the firm's strength in corporate, commercial, administrative and regulatory matters and the group has 'broad knowledge of complex legal matters' in the energy sector. The sector-focused practice attracts praise for 'thinking out of the box' and handles a range of advisory and contentious matters. Natalie Ulburghs (who splits her time between the firm's Brussels and Hasselt offices) and Hasselt-based Koen Geelen jointly head the team which counts Infrax, Bionerga and Inter-Energa among its clients.
Insolvency and restructuring Tier 3
The restructuring and insolvency team at Monard Law attracts praise for 'going beyond expectations'. It assists companies in distress, as well as acting for creditors and investors. Inge De Haes, who is based in Antwerp and is regularly instructed as bankruptcy trustees, is the key name. Youri Steverlynck left the firm.
Intellectual property Tier 3
Monard Law has 'strong expertise in IP law'. The team is representing Rolex and Rolex Benelux in ongoing trade mark and copyright litigation. Department head Daan De Jaeger ('a sharp and creative mind') is 'a dedicated lawyer who goes the extra mile for his clients'. Senior associate Willem De Vos is also recommended.
Private equity Tier 3
The 'trustworthy and accessible' corporate and commercial team at Monard Law frequently handles private equity and venture capital transactions. A team led by recently promoted partner Pieter Van den Broeck ('practical, focused and very pragmatic') assisted Invale and BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity with the acquisition of a majority stake in Stoffels. In another highlight, the group acted for the owners of Diresco on the sale of the company to an entity controlled by Creafund. Katrien Vorlat assisted Dawn Capital with a follow-on investment, as part of the series C equity round by Showpad. Recently promoted associate partner Maxime Monard is noted for venture capital transactions.
Monard Law's team head Birgitta Van Itterbeek has a particularly standout reputation in aviation finance, but her transactional expertise is broader, and also encompasses areas such as acquisition finance and structured finance. Van Itterbeek is also knowledgeable about various regulatory issues involving derivatives, UCITS and MiFID, among others. Elsewhere, project finance transactions are another pillar of the firm's banking practice; a notable recent highlight saw Bram Delmotte and Benoit Samyn co-lead a group in the advice to BNP Paribas Fortis, Belfius Bank and KBC Bank on the financing aspects of a circa €100m PPP project to construct a new headquarters building for the Antwerp Police Department. Stefaan Van Dyck is experienced in real estate finance transactions.

Recent instructions for Monard Law's 'very hands-on and practical' team includes disputes from the automotive and luxury goods sectors; Rolex, D'leteren, Suzuki Belgium and Hyundai Belux are key clients. Daan De Jaeger, Koen Geelen, Nicole Segers and Erik Monard are the names to note.
Employment Tier 4
Monard Law’s employment practice was recently bolstered by the arrival of Bert Theeuwes from Kelley Drye & Warren LLP; Theeuwes has notable expertise across the spectrum of employment matters, especially in transnational issues involving business migration and EU social security law. Peter Dufaux and Tom Messiaen are also key names.
The information and communication technology practice at Monard Law handles a range of commercial and contentious matters. Associate partner Ben Hermans advised hospital AZ Jan Palfijn on the negotiating and drafting of a license agreement for the roll-out of a new electronic patient record system. Kristof Zadora is leading a team assisting ACA IT-Solutions with a range of IT, data protection and intellectual property issues.
Real estate and construction Tier 4
PPP infrastructure projects are a prominent area of expertise for Monard Law's real estate practice, which also takes in litigation, predominantly for contractor clients. Recent work for the team includes assisting the lenders of Iret Development with the financing for the construction of a new police headquarters in Antwerp. Tax Tier 4
Led by Christiaan Barbier, Monard Law's team handles contentious and non-contentious tax matters for private individuals, corporate clients and public authorities. In the corporate sphere, it provides strategic tax advice in the context of mergers, acquisitions, reorganisations and the development of stock option plans. Frédéric Lettany recently acted as tax counsel to Rexel Belgium on its carve-out acquisition of Figibel's electrical appliances business and on its acquisition of DES Elektro. Hilde Van den Keybus advises private clients on estate and succession planning (including inheritance-related) issues.
