Jan Holthuis, partner and lawyer at BUREN, specialises in corporate and commercial law. Jan has particular experience in China-related cross-border mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring, international technology transfers, product liability insurance claims and international arbitration.

Career

After his studies at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, College of Law (London) and Science Po (Paris), Jan followed a postgraduate course at the Grotius Academy. Jan is admitted to the Amsterdam Bar and is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales. Jan founded HIL International Lawyers & Advisers in 1995. HIL became the first Dutch law firm in China with a license from the Chinese Ministry of Justice in 2004. In 2016, the HIL practice merged with BUREN.

Jan is a registered arbitrator with the China International Economic Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC). He founded the Agricultural Law Section of the International Bar Association in 2015, presided it for many years and is currently a member of its Advisory Board. Jan has been involved in many politically sensitive China-related international transactions and disputes acting for Western and Chinese clients. Jan is a member of the Board of Trustees of the world's oldest agricultural research institute Rothamsted Research in the UK. Jan is mainly based in Beijing.
