Macesic and Partners assists international clients doing business or looking to invest in Croatia. One of the oldest business-law oriented offices in the country provides expert assistance in complex, cross-border matters and operates through two offices in Zagreb and Rijeka.

Main areas of practice
Dispute resolution: The office provides assistance in dispute resolution for a number of industry sectors, predominately maritime, shipbuilding, insurance, finance, energy and corporate. The lawyers’ expertise and experience in a particular sector are an advantage in finding optimal solutions for clients. Assistance is provided in all dispute resolution forms: litigation, arbitration and mediation (the latter two in and outside Croatia (institutional/ad hoc)).

Energy and natural resources: The firm has been advising international energy companies for years and throughout the process of liberalisation of the domestic market, therefore obtaining an in-depth understanding of the oil and gas, electricity and renewables sector. The firm provides specialized assistance to clients seeking tailor-made solutions to enter the Croatian market, advising on project work or other energy-related matters.

Transportation: Macesic & Partners’ traditional and core practice area. The office covers all transportation sectors, maritime and inland, CMR, railway, air, assisting in contractual and in tort transportation matters. Experience in arranging surveys and preservation of evidence in transportation damages and liability exposure, and expert out-of-court claim handling, enable successful defence, compensation, indemnity or reimbursement in matters of transportation risks and damages. The firm covers the entire territory of Croatia through its strategically located offices in Zagreb (the capital) and Rijeka (main port) and a network of local correspondents. During the last 50 years Macesic and Partners have acted in all major transportation casualties protecting interests of various parties involved.

Insurance: Macesic & Partners acquired expertise in various types of insurance matters through its related transportation practice. The firm is engaged as correspondent, either listed or on case-to-case basis, for major international and local underwriters and P&I Clubs. It handles assets, life, liability and other insurance covers for insurers, insured or injured third parties in all stages of out-of-court or court cases.

Corporate/M&A/insolvency/corporate restructuring/competition/public procurement: The firm resolves various matters of corporate law, from general corporate assistance, corporate governance and compliance issues to demanding M&A deals, either with an international element or with underlying complex legal issues. It is not uncommon for Macesic and Partners’ corporate department to go beyond standard legal assistance and advise clients based on experience, adding value to company management. The firm has been advising creditors and debtors in restructuring and insolvency proceedings for years. The lawyers gained special experience in both operational and financial restructuring of distressed debtors by acting in a number of high-profile bankruptcy proceedings in Croatia. As an integral part of corporate practice, competition and public procurement are regular areas of assistance. A number of companies have decided to trust Macesic and Partners with their day-to-day corporate affairs, so the firm functions as their outsourced legal department.

Banking and finance: Assistance is provided in various practice areas within financial law: capital markets, project finance, fundraising (equity and debt). The department’s regular clients are international banks as well as four major domestic ones. Financial institutions turn to Macesic & Partners for advice related to financing, regulators’ issues, various models of debt collection, bankruptcies, restructuring of companies in difficulties, contracting, etc. Macesic & Partners has over 50 years of experience in ship and shipbuilding financings in various models. The firm has also been heavily involved in infrastructure financing (highways and electric generation and grids).

Intellectual property: A number of domestic and foreign clients choose Macesic & Partners to represent them in different areas of intellectual property and copyright law, i.e. patents, trademarks, designs and domain name registrations.
