Personal injury and clinical negligence: claimant Tier 1

In summer 2020, Blake Morgan LLP's entire personal injury and clinical negligence practice moved over to Enable Law, a standalone specialist firm within the Foot Anstey group. Dual qualified doctor and lawyer John White is a key figurehead in the practice and his area of focus includes cerebral palsy and brain injuries; he also has expertise in quantum work. Kym Provan specialises in catastrophic claims. Other core members include senior litigator Alison McClure, who is recommended for mental capacity matters, and qualified midwife Patricia Wakeford. On the personal injury side, the experienced James Wood oversees the team and handles the whole range of serious matters including head injuries, complex orthopaedic injuries, and occupational disease. Wood specialises in employer’s liability claims. Julia Prior is recommended.

‘Julia Prior works very hard for her clients, but has a sensible overview of the case at all times.’

‘James Wood is very meticulous and thorough and pays close attention to timetables.’

‘John White is medically qualified, which gives him an advantage in dealing with complicated medical issues. He is also very caring in respect of his lay clients.’

‘Kym Provan is incredibly hardworking, empathetic and has excellent judgement. She goes the extra mile for her clients but also gives them sensible and pragmatic advice, resulting in good settlements.’

‘Dr John White is intelligent, thoughtful and hugely experienced.

Exceptionally attentive service from my lead clinical negligence expert, John White. I also found him to be a kind and compassionate human being.

‘Kym Provan is a dedicated, thorough and meticulous solicitor who leaves no stone unturned in her attempts to secure the best for her clients. She has achieved some extraordinarily good results often in very testing circumstances.’

Testimonials

The IP team at Foot Anstey is highly responsive and provides useful advice to our attorneys. The team has a very high expertise not only in the legal aspects but in the important related business issues related to brand protection. Over 35 years I have worked with numerous UK-based IP and general firms with IP departments and Foot Anstey has been the best UK experience I have had to date. They also have an expertise in the entertainment field which is significant for our Los Angeles-based clients‘.

The firm has an excellent trade mark prosecution practice and also an excellent litigation practice. As such it is a great choice for firms which want first class advice but do not want to pay London rates‘.

The team were fantastic at all levels and during hearings were very good to ensure that I knew what was happening and were always available with any questions that I may have had‘.

Paul Cox is very responsive and goes out of his way to take care of client needs whether it is during the workday, evenings, or on weekends. He leads a very competent IP team‘.

Paul Cox is an excellent strategic thinker and very commercial. It is not uncommon for lawyers to get drawn into litigation to such an extent that they loose sight of the client’s commercial objectives. Paul certainly does not. He is also well versed at handling global trade mark portfolios and has excellent contacts in the wider IP world thus affording the client great value for money‘.

Paul Cox was great and really understood the impact on our business – I felt that this was very well integrated into all advice provided‘.

Helpful, always on hand to help. They understand our business and give commercial pragmatic advice.

James in particular is a standout for me, he’s very commercial, understands our business and I trust his advice. It feels like a partnership, which is so important with the nature of what we do. I like the human element he brings rather than legal speak.

They are exceptionally customer focussed and have spent the time truly understanding the nuances of our business and industry.

Again, an understanding of our business and industry and the, at times, unique challenges we face. We have a challenging work environment with significant cultural/legacy issues that we are addressing. The individuals we work with understand this and adapt their advice and input to help us best resolve issues.

The Lex 100 Verdict

Known for the 'level of City-quality work in a regional firm' and its 'good work/life balance', Foot Anstey is a major player in the South West. Trainees are drawn to the firm from their first interaction, commenting that 'it was the only assessment day I went to where the people felt real, honest and kind. In short: human'. Another said that the firm's location in the South West was a draw to be 'close to family' but also for access to 'high-end clients and good work/life balance'. Foot Anstey is a Lex 100 Winner for both the approachability of its partners and supervisors and for its vacation scheme. One respondent adds that the best thing about the firm is 'the people. Everyone is approachable and willing to help. People really do invest their time and effort to help you become a top solicitor'. In terms of training, respondents praise the firm's approach, saying 'I get far more client contact and exposure within the firm than friends elsewhere, and my hours are also far more manageable'. Trainees generally feel 'well remunerated', particularly with 'the additional benefits, such as lifestyle and family hours' taken into consideration. A drawback for some trainees is the possibility of 'having to move offices when you move seats'. If you are looking for a strong South West firm, Foot Anstey is right up there.
