Emma Niemistö
Partner Emma Niemistö advises our clients on construction and project law assignments. She focuses on major industrial and infrastructure investments, construction and engineering mandates, as well as real estate development and dispute resolution. A large part of her work also includes advisory services relating to EPC(M) projects, under the FIDIC suites or similar international forms of contracts.
Emma has long-standing experience in negotiating and drafting complex project agreements and providing risk and claims management advice relating to our clients’ critical projects and strategic investments. She benefits from her unique technical background in her advisory role; with a Master of Science degree in Construction Economics and Management from the Helsinki University of Technology, she draws from her understanding of project management and industrial/technical processes to get a strong handle on contract risks in demanding projects.
On contentious mandates Emma represents clients in litigation and arbitration proceedings, and also acts as arbitrator in construction and supply contract disputes.
Emma has also authored books on construction management contracting and contractors’ guarantee liabilities and is a sought-after speaker on topics related to construction law and dispute management.
Emma heads the firm’s Projects & Construction team.

Casper Herler
Partner Casper is a strategic adviser to the management of large industrial, natural resources and energy corporations. He provides holistic advice to large strategic projects and industrial investments by combining leading legal expertise with sector knowledge. He also possesses a deep understanding of stakeholder communications, governmental relations and corporate responsibility. Casper has served two terms as Borenius’ Managing Partner, a period during which conversations about topics on the C-suite agenda accumulated, which benefits his clients today.
A selection of Casper’s clients includes industrial clients, refineries and battery plants, datacentres, large infrastructure, energy and renewable projects, real estate investors, retail firms, financial institutions, chemical companies and traders as well as trade associations. Clients also acknowledge him as the leading Finnish mining lawyer, and he advises a significant number of the 50 largest major mining companies in the world.

Niina Nuottimäki
Partner Niina Nuottimäki advises on banking and finance, debt capital markets and debt restructuring. Niina has extensive experience in both domestic and cross border leveraged buyout deals, corporate lending, real estate finance and debt issuance. She also advises clients on trade finance and derivatives.
Niina heads the firm’s Banking & Finance team.

Kaisa Voutilainen
Counsel Kaisa Voutilainen Kaisa advises on dispute resolution and insolvency related questions. She represents clients in major litigations related to damages and contractual issues as well as in matters regarding bankruptcy estates and related actions for recovery. In addition, Kaisa has experience in advising companies and executives in relation to complex corporate crime cases and criminal investigations regarding, inter alia, environmental violations, misappropriation of funds and securities market offences.

Mari Ihatsu
Mari advises our clients in the areas of real estate law and transactions. Mari joined Borenius as an Associate in 2022, and before that, she worked at the firm as a trainee. Mari has also worked as a trainee at other law firms, at the Ministry of Justice and at a legal aid office.

Simon Ekman
Simon advises our clients on matters related to mergers and acquisitions with a predominant focus on real estate transactions.
Simon joined Borenius as an Associate in 2021. Prior to his graduation, Simon worked as a trainee at the firm. He has also gained experience in real estate advisory services and investment management at a globally leading real estate consultancy firm in Finland and at one of the world’s largest real estate investment companies in Munich, Germany.

Leif Laitinen
Leif has nearly 20 years of experience in national and, in particular, complex international real estate arrangements, including real estate portfolio and fund investments as well as sale and leaseback arrangements. He represents international, Nordic, and Finnish real estate funds, key investors, and private and public companies.
Leif is a graduate of the University of Helsinki, and he also holds a Master’s Degree in Law from Georgetown University in Washington D.C., USA. Leif is a member of the Finnish Bar Association and has also been admitted as a member of the New York State Bar Association.
