Banking and finance Tier 1
Plesner is recognised for its work on big-ticket deals for a client roster including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley. Practice co-head Thomas Maaberg Hansen is an expert in acquisition and project finance, while fellow co-head Søren Thyssen Valerius also focuses on corporate lending. Capital markets Tier 1
Plesner's clients single it out as 'probably the leading legal capital markets practice in Denmark' and praise its team of 'highly commercial yet legally brilliant partners, who are dedicated to delivering commercial sound legal advice'. The 'exceptional' Thomas Holst Laursen jointly leads the ECM team and advised DK Telekommunikation on its public takeover of TDC, which was previously owned by a consortium of Danish pension funds and Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets. Other work includes fellow ECM head Nicolai Ørsted assisting Sparekassen Sjælland-Fyn with its €61m rights issuance, and DCM group head Thomas Maaberg Hansen acting for DKT Finance on its €1.5m issuance of high-yield notes. Micha Fritzen and Henrik Laursen are highly experienced in handling IPOs; Laursen attracts praise as 'a very strong practitioner who always goes the extra mile for clients'.
Dispute resolution Tier 1
The group at Plesner has 'a superb dynamic across the team from junior associate to partner level', and clients single out Peter Schradieck, who is 'always engaged', 'positive' and 'simply very good at what he does'; he recently defended Nordea Bank Denmark in claims brought by the Municipality of Haderslev concerning swap transactions. Other work includes Torben Bondrop acting for CF Møller Architects in an arbitration relating to alleged design errors in the construction of the Mærsk Tårnet, and arbitrator Niklas Korsgaard Christensen handling an arbitration for Strukton Rail Denmark regarding the termination of a contract with railway company Banedanmark. Jimmy Skjold Hansen was recently promoted to the partnership and is experienced in cross-border matters.
Energy Tier 1
Plesner is active in the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors with clients including Dana Petroleum and Gaz-Systems; team leader Niklas Korsgaard Christensen advised the latter on the €500bn Baltic Pipe Project, which will be a gas pipeline between Denmark and Poland. Christensen also assisted Dong E&P with its €1.5bn upstream oil and gas development project in the North Sea, and Mikkel Falkenberg acted for AP Moller on its sale of Maersk to Total.
EU and competition Tier 1
Plesner fields 'a deep bench of good competition lawyers', with 'plenty of experience' under the joint leadership of litigator Christian Karhula Lauridsen and Gitte Holtsø, who is 'very practical, highly skilled and always available'. Recent highlights include Lauridsen advising Ørsted on its involvement in two cases brought by the Danish Competition Council and the Competition Appeals Tribunal involving claims of excessive pricing in the Western Denmark electricity market by Elsam, Holtsø advising EY Denmark on the competition elements of its merger with KPMG Denmark, and Daniel Barry assisting Marlin Equity Partners with the competition elements of its divestment of Bluegarden to Visma. GlaxoSmithKline, British American Tobacco and Dankse Bank are also clients. Rie Paving Mortensen was promoted to the partnership in 2018.
Information technology Tier 1
Contractual work, data protection and cloud computing are key strengths of Plesner's practice, which acts for clients including Danske Bank and Google. Niels Ellegaard jointly leads the team and recently advised Tryg Forsikring on its service agreements with companies including TCS, LTI and Accenture. Fellow practice head Michael Hopp specialises in data protection and assisted Copenhagen Airport with its GDPR compliance.
Insolvency Tier 1
The practice at Plesner is highly skilled in complex bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings; Lars Skanvig, who leads the practice, recently acted for a Danish manufacturing company on its multi-million euro insolvency. Other key figures include Pernille Bigaard and Michala Roepstorff, who are highly experienced in complex cross-border bankruptcies.
Insurance Tier 1
Torben Bondrop leads the practice at Plesner and has an extensive background in contentious insurance matters. Bondrop recently acted for Lego, which alleged that its excess property and business interruption insurance was wrongfully terminated by If Insurance. Also recognised is Charlotte Hasseriis Iversen, who advises on regulatory issues.
Intellectual property Tier 1
Plesner handles matters across all aspects of IP with particular strength in life sciences patent litigation. Team leader Mikkel Vittrup and Peter-Ulrik Plesner recently acted for a global pharmaceutical company in a patent infringement claim; patent and trade mark litigator Sture Rygaard handled a European patent ownership dispute; and Kasper Frahm advised on a high profile trade mark dispute. Also noted is Jeppe Brinck-Jensen, who specialises in patent and parallel import issues; he represented Merck in a case relating to the parallel distribution of medicinal products.
Media and entertainment Tier 1
Plesner predominantly focuses on IP, commercial, technology and publishing matters in the media and entertainment sector. Key figures from the team include corporate and compliance expert Michael Hopp, marketing and consumer law specialist Emil Jurcenoks, and Kasper Frahm, who has extensive experience in IP. Michael Vilhelm Nielsen joined Moalem Weitemeyer Bendtsen in 2018.
Real estate and construction Tier 1Plesner is noted for its work on high-profile transactions, projects and disputes. Niklas Korsgaard Christensen leads the construction team and primarily handles projects and arbitration matters; he recently assisted Dong with its €1.5bn development of the Hejrenoil and gas field in the North Sea, and worked with Peter Wengler-Jørgensen to advise on a multi-billion euro infrastructure project. Leif Djurhuus leads the real estate team and specialises in rental disputes. Other key practitioners include Peter Schradieck, Torben Bondrop, Frants Dalgaard-Knudsen. Tax Tier 1
Plesner runs the gamut of tax services for clients including Novo Nordisk, AP Møller and Lego. Practice co-heads Hans Hansen and Lasse Esbjerg Christensen have extensive experience in tax disputes and transfer pricing work; Christensen recently advised Capidea on the tax issues surrounding its launch of a fund, which invited international investments. Managing partner Tom Kári Kristjánsson is an expert in VAT, customs and excise duty; he acted for IBM in a dispute against the Danish Ministry of Taxation relating to VAT, which was added to compensation received from an IT-agreement breach.

Plesner has notable expertise in public and commercial telecoms matters; group head Niels Ellegaard recently advised TT-Netværket on its outsourcing to Nokia, and transactional specialist Christian Kjølbye handled Macquarie's acquisition of TDC. Main areas of practice: Banking and finance: The firm’s banking and finance group provides expert advice on acquisition financing, capital market instruments, project financing, including financing of energy projects, asset-based financing, including aircraft and ship financing, regulatory matters, derivatives and structured products and financial restructurings.
Corporate/M&A: Plesner is the Danish law firm involved in most mergers and acquisitions in the Nordics in the period 2000-2019 including most of the noteworthy transactions in Denmark. The firm’s M&A specialists render expert advice on transactions, including investments, joint ventures, mergers, demergers and restructurings as well as provide due diligence process management.
Capital markets: Plesner’s capital markets group advises listed, particularly Danish, companies and Danish and foreign financial institutions on all corporate and securities law matters in respect of companies and stocks listed on NASDAQ OMX Nordic Exchange Copenhagen and other regulated markets. The team’s services cover the entire field, including IPOs, accelerated book building, rights issues, direct placements, capital adjustments, public takeovers, bond issues, advice to listed companies on their general ongoing compliance obligations, pursuant to capital markets legislation as well as disclosure requirements, flagging etc. and corporate governance.
Commercial contracts: The commercial contracts group provides advice to undertakings within most industries on the preparation and conclusion as well as the contractual rights and obligations of all types of agreements, including joint venture, facility management, turnkey, franchising, production, supply, distribution and agency agreements.
Commercial real estate: Plesner’s real estate lawyers advise leading Danish and international investors, developers and property companies at all stages of investments in financing and development of commercial properties from acquisition to sale. The group provides expert advice inter alia to shopping centres, hotels, investment properties for residential and commercial purposes, production facilities and warehouses, etc. irrespective of whether the property in question has been acquired for investment or development purposes.
Dispute resolution: Dispute resolution is one of the firm’s key strengths. The dispute resolution group has solid experience and expertise in appearing before international and domestic courts with many of the lawyers holding positions on international dispute resolution associations. The group spans across a wide range of legal areas including tax, IT, insolvency, insurance, intellectual property and construction disputes.
Insolvency and reconstruction: The insolvency and reconstruction group’s specialists assist in restructuring proceedings, act as trustees in bankruptcy proceedings and advise clients in avoidance proceedings. The group is widely experienced in bankruptcy proceedings, and it has acted in many of the most notable Danish insolvencies of late. It has been particularly active in assisting clients within the real estate, shipping and airline sectors.
Tax: The firm’s widely recognised tax specialists advise Danish and international clients on all tax and duty related issues and conduct a large number of tax and duty related cases before the tax authorities, the local tax appeal tribunals, the National Assessment Council, the National Tax Tribunal, the High Courts, the Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice.
