Javier Fontcuberta, Managing partner
Javier Fontcuberta, managing partner of Cuatrecasas, shares the firm's strategic vision and how to anticipate clients’ needs in a constantly evolving legal environment.
What do think differentiates Cuatrecasas from your competitors?
Cuatrecasas stands out for its international approach, specialized teams and a strong commitment to legal and technological innovation. We put the client at the center of our organization, offering comprehensive and agile advisory services adapted to each sector and jurisdiction. We also use a talent management model that drives lawyer development, meaning they can anticipate and solve our clients’ most complex challenges.
Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What do you think is driving that?
Even in an uncertain and changing international context, we expect sustained growth in key areas, including finance, international arbitration, tax, compliance, sustainability, and everything related to technology, digitalization and cybersecurity. However, trends in demand and regulatory changes can influence the development of different specialties, so we maintain a flexible and attentive view of market trends to anticipate and respond to our clients’ needs.
What is the main change you have made at the firm that will benefit clients?
We have structured our organization by specialty and sub-specialty groups. This enables us to offer a more specialized and efficient service, regardless of the location of both client and lawyer. Since 2022, the integration of artificial intelligence in our daily operations has improved the flexibility of our advisory service.
Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?
Without a doubt. Technology, specifically artificial intelligence, enables us to speed up processes, improve communication and offer more personalized and efficient solutions. In this context, it is essential that AI is always used under the supervision of specialized lawyers, so we can guarantee quality, security and legal rigor in our advice. This combination translates into greater added value for our clients.
Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client add value to their business?
We assist our clients in transformation and growth processes, adapting to the specific characteristics of each sector and market. For example, we have advised companies on implementing new European regulations on sustainability and digitalization, enabling them to anticipate regulatory changes and mitigate risks. In the transactional field, we have guided clients in complex international mergers and acquisitions, providing a strategic and multidisciplinary vision which has enabled them to optimize structures and make the most of expansion opportunities. In international arbitration and litigation, our proactive and specialized approach has been key to defending our clients’ interests and reaching favorable solutions. In all cases, our aim is to create value and help companies be more competitive, efficient and resilient in an increasingly demanding global environment.
Clients are looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms. Where do you see the firm in three years’ time?
Clients value stability, long-term vision and the ability to anticipate changes in an increasingly complex global environment. At Cuatrecasas, we offer a clear and coherent strategy based on excellence, innovation and talent development, enabling us to assist our clients with their current and future challenges.
Over the next three years I see the firm growing sustainably, enabling us to consolidate our leadership even more in Europe and Latin America. We will continue to strengthen our international presence and our commitment to sustainability and digitalization. Our aim is to grow in terms of turnover and achieve sustainable and profitable results, while always staying true to our values and maintaining the trust our clients have placed in us.
