Legal Market Overview
Uncertainty continues to hang over Tanzania’s legal market. While it has attracted international firms Clyde & Co LLP along with South African firms Bowmans and ENSafrica, the market is far from stable. Norton Rose Fulbright lost its office head Adam Lovett, who joined Travers Thorp Alberga in the Cayman Islands and leading litigator RW Tenga of Law Associates (Advocates) has been charged with alleged money laundering, among other charges; on his election in 2015, president John Pombe Magufuli prioritised efforts to reduce corruption. Economic initiatives such as the introduction of local content laws in the natural resources sector to boost the local economy and the availability of jobs have been contentious, not least because there are concerns that it will hinder foreign investment. Norton Rose Fulbright closed its office in the country in April 2019.
