Shoosmiths LLP opened its Leeds office in late 2016, which is ‘quickly establishing itself in the city’, with the recruitment of team head Philip Goldsborough and the ‘commercially savvy and strategic’ James Foster from  Irwin Mitchell, and Alex Kirkhope from DLA Piper UK LLP. Goldsborough is recognised for his M&A expertise, Foster handles corporate finance deals and Kirkhope is the key commercial specialist. Recent mandates include acting for August Equity on its sale of The Leaving Care Company, Aspirations Specialist Residential Children’s Services and Crossways Care (Holdings); advising YFM Equity Partners on its buy out of 4Net Technologies and assisting HI Oldham Road with its acquisition of McGarr McGarrick. Lloyds Development Capital, SIG and Schoeller Bleckmann Oilfield Equipment are also clients.

Matthew Howarth leads the practice at Shoosmiths LLP following his recruitment from Gordons LLP in 2017; he has experience in shareholder and warranty claims, professional negligence issues, contractual disputes, financial services claims and pensions disputes. Recent highlights include defending the former managing partner of an insolvency practice in claims alleging breaches of duty, acting for a former partner of a solicitor practice in proceedings relating to breaches of a partnership agreement, and representing a manufacturer and supplier of welding and positioning equipment in trade mark litigation. Senior associate Emma Lowe is also a name to note; she joined from Genus Law in 2017.

Simon Meek joined from DWF to lead Shoosmiths LLP’s newly established Leeds team, which saw significant recruitment from firms across the market. Development and investment specialist Judy Fawcett joined from Ward Hadaway, development-focused Thomas Hall and Kellie Hatton joined from Irwin Mitchell, Michael Whitworth, who focuses on residential work, and Edell Asquez arrived from DWF . Recent highlights for the new department include advising Highwood Group on its acquisition of a site for a residential mixed-use development, handling the acquisition of a motorway service area for Extra MSA Group, and acting for Cinnamon Group on the acquisition and development of multiple care home and retirement scheme sites. Strata Homes, Allied London, Sports Direct and Park Lane Properties are also clients.
