Deepak Pillai and Intan Haryati are the leading names in Christopher & Lee Ong’s TMT practice, both are recognised for their vast expertise in TMT-related matters and have gained a deserved reputation for handling cutting-edge work in the area. Kuok Yew Chen and Yau Yee Ming are also key members of the practice. The team is advising UEM Group on all legal aspects of its business and IT transformation, which comprises a comprehensive evaluation to identify the best technology to support their digital transformation. This work included negotiating and drafting all project documentation from the tender process to the execution of the contract. Other clients include The Association of Banks of Malaysia, Berjaya Corporation and Life Insurance Association of Malaysia.

Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill has a proven track record acting for corporations in regulatory, licensing, compliance and data protection matters. Adlin Abdul Majid is the key contact for transactional and regulatory issues, the telecom disputes practice is headed by G Vijay Kumar, while the IT disputes section is jointly led by Bahari Yeow and SM Shanmugam. Highlights for the practice have included advising Oracle on its eligibility to apply as a foreign corporation for a Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status, an initiative by the Government of Malaysia to attract foreign and local investment into the country.

Skrine acts for local and foreign clients on data protection issues, regulatory compliance matters and patent disputes. Charmayne Ong leads the practice, which includes Khoo Guan Huat, Leela Baskaran and Jillian Chia.

Working closely with the other firm’s departments, Raja, Darryl & Loh’s TMT group advises advises its clientele on matters connected to IT systems, software licensing, outsourcing, mobile/e-commerce, telecoms and data protection. In a notable work highlight it acted for Trilliant Networks (Canada) (TNCI) on its agreement with Tenaga Nasional (the largest power company in Southeast Asia) to design, supply, deliver, install, license and maintain a purpose-built communications platform for a project in Malacca. Tong Lai Ling is the key name.

Wong & Partners’ Brian Chia advised Hewlett-Packard on the separation of its Malaysian printing and personal system business to HP PPS Multimedia. In a different instruction, the practice acted for Measat Broadcast Network System in a RM15m licence fee claim.

Abdul Raman Saad & Associates has vast expertise advising on matters connected to technology, media and telecoms, among others. Managing partner Abdul Raman Saad is noted for his expertise.

Mohamed Ridza & Co has been very active advising a list of notable clients on TMT issues. Work highlights included assisting a major telecoms corporation on reviewing, amending and negotiating the terms of a collaboration agreement for the production, distribution, sales and marketing of sport outfits and merchandise connected to an international sports event; it acted for the same client in matters connected to its agreement to integrate a consortium to tender for a major project. Naqiz & Partners provides specialised up-to-date expertise in areas such as telecoms, e-commerce, media, data privacy, system outsourcing, biotechnology and Fintech. Nadia Kamal led the advice to Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MAGIC) on setting up the legal framework for its Entrepreneurship/ASEAN Acelerator Program in Cyberjaya. Brian Lew leads the practice, which includes Syed Naqiz.

Karen Abraham leads the TMT practice at Shearn Delamore & Co. Work highlights include advising a government agency on its programme to promote online gaming services in the country, including software protection and patent of computer developed inventions. Timothy Siaw is the key name.

Seow & Associates specialises in media and entertainment law, handling production deals, distribution matters and related intellectual property work, among other issues. The team recently provided advice on chain of title documentation and applicable Malaysian laws and regulations to Eleven Film with regards to the British television series Gap Year, which follows a group of backpackers taking a trip through Asia. Clients also include Barking Cow Media Group and Biscuit Films. Jessie Tan is the name to note.

Zain & Co has a longstanding presence in the market advising clients on corporate and commercial issues connected to the telecoms and media sectors. The practice works closely with the IT department to meet clients’ needs such as strategies for high-end technology M&A, licensing, distribution rights, entertainment-related financings and data privacy issues.
