The ‘simply superbAequitas has expertise in litigation and arbitration, with a strong track record in construction-related disputes. Practice head Valikhan Shaikenov focuses heavily on the real estate and construction sector; arbitrator Klara Mukasheva recently joined from Dentons; and managing partner Olga Chentsova has a significant skillset in international arbitration. Senior associate Ardak Idayatova handles construction disputes. The firm recently advised ExxonMobil on a pre-trial settlement pertaining to a Kazakh company using the client’s logo in an advertisement.

Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP has the capability ‘to deal with the complex technical and commercial aspects of international arbitration and ADR’ and ‘the team’s ability to grasp the primary issues and principles of a dispute, however obscure and complex, is exemplary’. Managing partner Askar Moukhitdinov regularly handles cases for the Kazakh government.

Dentons’ multi-disciplinary practice has strong expertise in contractual, banking, and tax and customs-related disputes. Kanat Skakov co-heads the practice and has a significant background in the natural resources sector. Fellow co-head Victoria Simonova specialises in complex commercial litigation and arbitration. Aigoul Kenjebayeva is active in tax, commercial and debt recovery-related disputes.

Kinstellar LLP is ‘a first-class firm’ which handles disputes in the real estate and construction, natural resources and energy, pharmaceutical and healthcare and FMCG sectors. The team has notable expertise handling cross-border disputes, where it ‘understands the international dimension and at the same time is very knowledgeable on Kazakh law’. Practice head Mukhit Yeleuov is ‘a sharp analyst’ and is skilled in corporate, commercial and construction disputes. Senior associate Dina Berkaliyeva is also experienced in construction-related disputes.

Reed Smith LLP’s disputes practice includes individuals drawn from the firm’s Astana and London offices. London-based Belinda Paisley, who heads the practice, specialises in international arbitration, particularly state-investor disputes, and Adil Idrissov has strong expertise in investment treaty claims.

Baker & McKenzie - CIS, Limited’s disputes team is led by Azamat Kuatbekov, who has extensive experience in litigation and arbitration, particularly in the natural resources space.

Centil Law focuses on international and local arbitration, and has notable expertise in disputes concerning the construction, employment and energy sectors. Practice head Dinara Jarmukhanova was a recent arrival from Reed Smith LLP. Azim Usmanov and Sergey Kim have expertise in litigation and ADR.

Domestic litigation is a mainstay of Grata International’s practice, which also has an increasing focus on international litigation and arbitration. Practice head Bakhyt Tukulov is ‘very energetic’ and ‘goal and client oriented’.

Integrites’ team is skilled in commercial and civil litigation, arbitration and debt recovery disputes. International arbitration specialist Kurmangazy Talzhanov is an important figure, as are Duman Akhmetov and Svetlana Shtopol.

Linkage & Mind LLP is experienced in corporate, commercial and tax disputes. Managing partner Yerzhan Manasov has expertise in arbitration.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP’s team is based across the firm’s Almaty and London offices, and has a core focus on international arbitration. Aset Shyngyssov is the name to note.

Signum Law Firm is experienced in commercial, employment, tax and administrative disputes. Managing partner Sofiya Zhylkaidarova is a key name for commercial disputes, while Talgat Sariev handles labour and employment issues.

Unicase Law Firm’s team of ‘young, bright, highly intelligent and successful lawyers’ is particularly strong in construction and insolvency-related disputes. Practice head Artem Timoshenko has the ‘ability to think outside of the box’; he is experienced in litigation and arbitration, with a particular focus on tax and customs, and labour and employment law.

Civil and criminal litigation is the core focus of Nazkhanov and Partners’ disputes practice. Team head Tair Nazkhanov is highly skilled in white-collar criminal defence cases.

Sayat Zholshy & Partners is a key name for corporate and banking disputes, and is regularly involved in disputes with government authorities. Practice head Vitaliy Vodolazkin is a key contact.

Synergy Partners Law Firm LLC handles disputes related to employment, intellectual property and consumer rights. Nurzhan Stamkulov leads the litigation team.
