Birketts LLP ‘compares favourably to the leading shipping firms worldwide’, according to one client. Another observes that the firm delivers ‘first-class service for transport law’. The firm is on a number of panel and acts for companies such as Samsun Logix, West of England P&I Club, AXA Seguros and Fred Olson Cruise Lines. Nicholas Woo heads the shipping and international trade team and is ‘very commercial; he understands the industry and always takes a common-sense approach’. Woo advised a major shipping company on a multimillion-pound dispute concerning grain shipments that were rejected by the buyer. Road transport and shipping partner Alex Davey is ‘a brilliant and positive professional, always available to provide well-reasoned advice and adapt it to clients’ needs’. He advised a logistics client on the impact of the demise of a major shipping line. Also recommended are shipping and cargo claims specialist Henry Adams; barrister Laura Thomas, for regulatory matters; and senior associate Sarah Holsgrove, for contentious shipping and international trade work.

Gotelee Solicitors has a ‘highly capable’ team of lawyers that is ‘robust and effective, always telling it like it is; clients can trust them to get results and its years of experience really show’. Clients have ‘complete confidence in the firm’s ability and preparation and its longstanding track record makes it a top-flight adviser to the transport and logistics industry, particularly in the area of road transport. Howard Catherall is ‘a star – cool-headed and thoughtful but extremely tough; there is no shouting but hard reasoning and plenty of backbone’. His highlights included advising a Polish lease finance company on impounding proceedings; acting on due diligence matters for an Ipswich-based importing subsidiary of a Chinese company; and assisting a Dutch munitions haulier with an application to renew permissions to import into the UK. Former Royal Military Policeman and Trading Standards specialist Stephen Brown worked with Catherall to advise numerous London-based fulfilment houses and China-based e-commerce traders on HMRC and National Trading Standards investigations. Litigator Hugh Rowland is recommended for regulatory matters.

In February 2017, Ashtons Legal’s Ipswich office was joined by a highly experienced regulatory team from Woodfines LLP in Cambridge, including road transport specialist Tim Ridyard and solicitor Tim Norris, who are ‘extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date on all areas of legislation’. Ridyard advises on a range of regulatory matters but his strongest niche is in road transport law, in which he acts for goods and passenger operators on matters such as drivers’ hours, driver conduct and compliance. Counsel notes that his ‘knowledge is tight and to the point, and his communication with clients is exceptional’.

Leathes Prior has a strong commitment to road transport law and is known for its innovative Traffic Lawyers online service, which enables it to provide a national service backed by experienced lawyers who provide specialist knowledge of the laws and procedures governing drivers in the UK. Regulatory lawyer Tim Cary has over 30 years’ experience advising and defending individuals and businesses facing prosecution for road traffic offences. He is ably assisted by rising star Tej Thakkar. Among the team’s many recent highlights is the defence of a client facing three separate charges relating to a motor accident, including the use of a handheld mobile phone while driving. Magistrates upheld the defence team’s position that mitigating factors met the threshold for ‘exceptional hardship’ and awarded points on the driver’s licence rather than imposing a disqualification from driving.

Prettys has a broad practice that covers all aspects of shipping, transport and logistics law, although it is best known for ship finance, dry shipping, ship arrest and freight forwarding matters. Consultant Roger White leads a ‘friendly and approachable team’ that is greatly valued for its ‘excellent speed of response’, and includes one trainee and one shipping administration assistant. White’s clients include DSV Road, DSV Air & Sea, DSV Logistics and Yang Ming Line. The firm’s recent highlights include advising a major player in the freight shipping market on urgent matters arising from the insolvency of customers that impacted financing and factoring issues. White also advised the leasing arm of a European bank on a multimillion-pound mortgage enforcement action.
