Led by Aidan McCormack in New York, the insurance practice at DLA Piper LLP (US) has two main prongs: transactional counsel and regulatory advice. The group houses a strong regulatory practice spearheaded by Baltimore-based Kathleen Birrane, who recently rejoined the firm after serving as Maryland Insurance Commissioner and the chair of the NAIC’s Innovation, Cybersecurity and Technology Committee, where she developed a specialism in the use of AI by the insurance industry. On the transactional side, the team is instructed by insurers, reinsurers, MGAs, brokers, and Insurtech firms to advise on a wide array of transactions, from M&A, to VC investments, to receiverships, and to execute complex financing structures. Strengthening the bench is Chicago-based Stephen Schwab, who comes recommended for cross-border matters, New York-based Ryan Moreno, who leads work on bespoke transactions and investment structures, and Baltimore-based Matthew Gorra, who works on transactional matters involving private equity and venture capital, securities issuances, and corporate matters.
