Founding partner Samantha Thompson focuses her practice on resolving complex business disputes for corporate and individual energy clients. Samantha excels at pinpointing important details in complicated cases and then applying those findings to successful legal strategies. She views each matter as an integral part of her clients’ businesses and is energized by helping them reach a favorable resolution. Samantha’s practice niche includes complex title disputes, including adverse possession, record title and bona fide purchasers, retained acreage clauses, and lease termination claims.
From the start of her practice, Samantha has focused on learning and developing oil and gas law in Texas and Oklahoma. Samantha has been at the forefront of oil and gas caselaw development in Texas through her participation in multiple amicus briefs before the Texas Supreme Court on behalf of the Texas Oil and Gas Association. Samantha has also been involved in multiple oil and gas litigation matters throughout the state of Texas on cutting-edge legal issues related to, among other things, allocation wells, production in paying quantities and adverse possession of oil and gas interests.
She has presented on oil and gas issues at events hosted by the Houston Bar Association Energy Law Section and the Texas State Bar. She is also an active member of the Institute for Energy Law Young Energy Professionals group as a current member of the group’s Council, as a former chair of the Membership Committee, and as a member of the Institute for Energy Law’s 5th Leadership class. Samantha is active in non-energy groups of the Houston Bar Association, including as a member of the inaugural committee of the Houston Bar Association’s LGBT+ Committee from 2019-2021.
Samantha has been honored with prestigious awards from Chambers and Partners, which has named her a Band 2 Oil and Gas Litigator since 2022, and Benchmark Litigation, which has included her on the 40 & Under List since 2024. She’s also been recognized as a Texas Rising Star by Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers since 2021 and included in the 2024-2026 editions of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America for Energy Law, Commercial Litigation, and Oil and Gas Law.
Samantha graduated cum laude from Harvard Law school, where she served as Notes Editor of the Harvard Law Review and Executive Technical Editor for the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender. Prior to law school, she attended Rice University, earning an undergraduate degree in psychology. As meticulous in her decision to become a lawyer as she is in her practice, Samantha spent two years gaining invaluable experience as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Claire V. Eagan of the Northern District of Oklahoma and to the Honorable Robert E. Bacharach of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals before joining Reynolds Frizzell LLP. She brings all of this experience, along with her client-driven approach, to the Hogan Thompson Schuelke team.
