On 15 February 1996 the authorities began distributing to Ukrainian citizens a new type of privatisation paper - compensation certificates intended to make good the losses suffered by the depositors of the State Savings Bank and State Insurance Company. The certificates may be used to acquire shares in privatised companies. It is noteworthy that in contrast to privatisation certificates used up to now, compensation certificates may be freely traded to companies and individuals including non resident ones.
