250,000 VCDS Seized From Shophouse (ST 06.06.99)

SingaporeIntellectual Property

Following a tip-off from the public, officers from the police and the Films and Publications Department ("FPD") raided several outlets in Serangoon Road and Sim Lim Square for illegal video compact discs ("VCDs"). More than 257,000 counterfeit VCDs were seized, of which 250,000 were from an empty shophouse in Serangood Road. This is believed to be the largest number seized from a single operation.

The police and FPD officers also found registry books containing details of the illegal distribution of VCDs at the shophouse, which is believed to be a distribution centre.

At Sim Lim Square, two-thirds of the 3,700 VCDs seized contained obscene and offensive material. 6 men and a woman were arrested.
